Neck finish

I'm starting to build a '51 P Bass with parts from Warmoth. I'm sure I'll have many questions as I've never done this before so sorry in advance for any 'newbie' Qs!

When finishing the neck, how is the fingerboard addressed? Do you finish the whole shebang at once or is there a separate technique for the fingerboard?

I usually finish the whole shebang at once when I use danish oil to finish the instrument.

What kind of finish are you going to use? What kind of fretboard does the neck have? What kind of core wood?

It is a maple neck with maple fretboard. I've ordered the Fender neck amber from ReRanch.....

So, is ReRanch re-finishing the neck or are you? If them, are they going to finish the whole neck? Or are they just finishing the back of the neck and not the fretboard?

If you are the one finishing the neck, have you decided on the kind of finish you're going to use yet?

I'm going to be doing the finishing. I 'think' I'll be using a nitro clear coat aerosol also from ReRanch. If I'm way off with what I'm thinking, please let me know. My feelings are not easily hurt!

if you want a consistent color FB and neck, shoot the whole thing as a complete unit, remember to use a thin painters tape( 1/8" ) to tape off the fret crowns(Tops) to save you some time and dressing headaches.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the neck from Warmoth yesterday and after some deliberation went ahead and paid the extra $75 for them to finish it. I will be doing the body myself (it should be here today) and I'm sure I'll have my hands full with that as this will be my first time building a bass, well with Warmoth parts. I'll save the hardcore start with a block of wood bass build for the future!

I'm thinking of doing a build thread, I'll make sure I get good pictures, but I won't have the neck for about 6 weeks, so it'll be a long process!

I'm glad you had them finish the neck because I know next to nothing about hard finishes

I'd advise you spend the time practicing your body finish on some scrap wood. The money spent on extra finishing materials will be worth it when you do it for real. That's if you want a really professional looking result.

I have an old Squire body that I was going to use as a Guinea Pig, but I think I will try it on a scrap piece of wood instead. Thanks!
