Neck jig for fret level?

How about a piece of 1/8" by whatever bar stock with small holes drilled in each end to run the wire through? Or even just a notch in the bar, and wrap the wire around the notch to hold it in place. Make it half an inch wider than the widest neck you work on. That gets you out of the worry of denting the sides of the nut shelf where the wire runs over the corner.

is there plain "music wire" thicker than .026"? piano wire maybe?

Yes indeedy, though my stock that I actually bought happens to be mostly stainless springwire (rather than plain) for reasons having to do with the way my head works. Visit MSC, McMaster, or some other metalwork suppliers.

Looking at McMaster in the "convenient straight 1 foot chunks" (as opposed to rolled up springwire where you have to convince it to be straight before you can convince it to be bent how you want it bent) lineup, I see:

0.0904" Matte finish 304 stainless, 0.102" mirror finish 304 stainless (and smaller sizes)

In Carbon Steel, 1080 and 1065 both go up to 0.187"

Not going to look more comprehensively than that, you can do that, you have a better idea of what you actually want.
