Neck Movement

The neck on my 50's P moves. When I pull back on the neck it moves a few mils; it moves enough to bend the pitch. The screws holding the neck on are pretty tight so I have no idea.
Is this something that this specific bass is supposed to do (I don't think so) or do I need to be worried about integral damage?
Any word on this matter would be helpful considering all the professionals that frequent this site. Hopefully ya'll can help me out. Thanks.
