Double Bass Neck pain

There's so much to cover in this thread. I'll do it in steps.
I talked to other bass players and they feel the neck pain too but they just say they play through it.
That is just stupid. Does anyone believe Artur Rubenstein, or Pablo Casals, or Isaac Stern, etc. spent their careers playing through pain? Playing through it is an excellent path to developing chronic, unmitigated pain.
What's the best short term option at the moment and then what is the Long term option I should take over the christmas holidays?
Long term = the Christmas holidays?
This is a mindset that will keep you from recovering.
Please re-read Uncletoad's posts, then stop and reflect.

+1 to Don Higdon's post.

I also wonder, who are these players who talk about living/playing with pain? I have never seen/heard a really great bassist who looked tense.

Again, motion equals sound. If we have pain when we move, it has to come out in our playing, IMHO. If I were in pain, I would want to fix it, just to improve my sound, even if for no other reason...:)
