Double Bass Neck replacement

I think you are right, though I had not noticed the seam until you pointed it out...Matthew would have to answer that one... but at least his are not obvious.

Anyway, for a while they were actually gluing on plastic ears, let alone the wooden ones. (sigh...)

The neck is made in two parts from a 40mm plank, with a centre seam glued with hide glue, and a graphite reinforcement under the FB. The ears are glued on with hide glue.

Cutting a neck out of a standard billet results in such a waste of wood, makes me feel a little guilty. I suppose its not so bad if you are also making fiddles and can use the maple offcuts to make smaller necks.

Anyway, THAT scroll I eventually tired of the hump in the first turn, it annoyed me every time I looked at it, so I reshaped it and now it is perhaps less eye-catching, but more pleasing to my eye. I have pics if anyone's interested.

Sorry to derail the thread a bit.

This was my first scroll, mind, and I don't know why it ended up with such a large first turn. Well actually i DO know, the blackwood is very hard and a chore to carve. My tentative first outline cut with a jigsaw (before I had my bandsaw) would have been pretty much what i ended up with.

During the rasping and smoothing. Still VERY hard work, but the grain comes up beautifully. This is, remember, a laminated scroll. You can just see the glue line.

It won't win any awards, but annoys me less than before. I'm glad I took the time to re-do it!
