Neck-Through question

Good idea.

I have yet to try gluing the top to the necklam, then gluing the wings after.

Typically, I start by cutting the difference of height on the neck lam and the desired body angle. Glue the body wings, level the top surface, then glue my top on.

Thats how I did it too.

I can't remember for sure, but I think I built up both wings including the tops, then glued them to the neck. The reason was that this allowed me to do the roundover on the wings more easily. Of course it meant I had to be extra careful that the tops met up perfectly.

I did my roundover with it all glued up-no problem (other than I forgot I had already drilled the input jack hole........)

Ouch. I've not done this, but I've seen it happen, and it made my heart sink. There's this moment, when the body shifts, the mind realizes that wasn't right, and before you even look, you realize. I've done similar on some furniture thingy somewhere, but luckily we could just run it across the joiner (and its sister part), and add a little to the stiles to retain overall height.

What'd you do about it?

Hi. I am new to the forums thing so I hope i am doing this right. Just wanted some advice. I was customizing an old yamaha RBX bass i had. I stuck a new p/j pickup AERO set in (single coil jazz) with a Mike Pope 3 band preamp. I wanted to experiment some more on the bass and add a wooden pick guard top to cover about 1/2 to 3/4 of the body made of alder(maple neck/rosewood finger board). The bass right now sounds really good but was wondering what wood would you suggest as a top for this set up right now to add the icing on the cake for this bass. I was thinking of something warm sounding if that is possible.

A pickguard, regardless of material, will not affect the tone in any way...
