neck through

Generally speaking, and the key word here is "generally" neck-thru's have better sustain, but there are a lot of manufacturers who make basses that are bolt-on or other type that sustain just as good.

i like both, it all depends on the tone aswell, bolt-ons are generally more trebly and snappy and neck-thrus are generally warmer

I own both, and the difference is pretty negligible IMO. My Cort is neck-through. It dosen't have a huge attack and isn't very warm, but the notes are nice and clear when the crappy preamp isnt on. The bolt-ons I have do have more of an attack to their sound, but some of them are muddy and undefined.

The problem here is that we're talking bolt-on compared to neck-through, all else being equal. It's damn hard to make everything else equal. The grain of the tonewood matters a lot. Strings matter a lot. Pickups are critical. Most of these can't be controlled for, either. Even two basses made as identical as possible except for neck type (same body wood as much as possible, same electronics, new sets of the same kind of strings, same fingerboard, etc.) are made of physically different blocks of wood, and my ear tells me that one block doesn't sound like the next.

So I think ultimately we're comparing looks against price (though bolt-ons are replaceable). Pick whatever appeals to you most. You can't go wrong.

I've owned and played neck-throughs before, but it's bolt-ons for me now. The difference is more palpable than audible, though. Slightly faster response, slightly livelier dynamics. A block heel doesn't bother me, I don't need much high-register access.

This is purely psychological, but I've always felt like I have to be more careful with neck-throughs, as if they are more fragile or something.

I've always felt that bolt-ons were simply tougher, and made for gigging.

I don't really care sound or play wise as I've had both but it just feels soooo.....sensual....Anyway I love pretty wood..like mine...it's a porno thing..:bassist:
