Neck Tint Is Killing My Vibe (With Poll!)

I recently became the owner of a Classic Vibe 70’s P bass, and this thing is a heck of a player and quite the tone machine. It’s a great bass, but there’s one small problem; the neck tint really bugs me. It’s just too dang yellow! It reminds me of a Pittsburgh Steelers/penguins bass. (Pic provided for contrast to what I would call “normal” maple coloring). While I’ve only had it a few days, it’s already got me thinking about selling it. I was excited for this bass, because I really
like the look of the Geddy Jazz, and had hoped the neck would be more that sort of maple coloring. When I first got it, the yellow was the first thing that I noticed, but I figured I would grow to like it. Alas, not yet. The tint is really making me have a hard time bonding with it. I just don’t feel that warm fuzzy feeling when I look at it, that makes me want to pick it up and play it, like my other basses do. The neck tint is just killing my vibe for this classic vibe. Has anyone else had a bass that the neck tint or color just didn’t work for you?

Hah! When I saw the word “vibe” in the title, the SCV necks were the first thing I thought of.

They’re missing some amount of orange-brown and even if they had that, they don’t have the checking lines all over that you’d get with an aged neck.

Like a 20yo girl with her hair dyed silver, a low quality spray tan, and wearing one of Irene Ryan’s BH outfits in public... it is weird looking.

Not a deal breaker on the bass if it sounds and plays well enough.

honestly has been one of the things keeping me from buying the sunburst 50s precision, the neck tint is hideous. I love the clean white maple of the LPB CV 50s pbass I have. I guess I will have to settle for the chinese made blonde 50s precision


Edit: and yes I've actually sold a pbass before because of an "orange-y" neck tint on a neck with pearl blocks and white binding. looked HORRIBLE. looked fine in photos but was unbearable in person. Reminiscent of the old headstock SX guitars/basses that had burnt orange "aged lacquer"

I love those tints! I really dislike it when instrument necks are super pale or white looking. Give me a little color to spice things up

I like the tint. The older VM’s had “Simpsons’ Yellow” tint (which I own), but the CV’s tint is slightly more brown-ish...

That’s funny, that’s exactly what I said to my wife “it’s Simpsons yellow!”. The new Indonesian CV’s have a brown/dark amber tint, but these older Chinese CV70’s have the same super yellow tint my VM telecaster bass had.

I have a Vintage 1974 Natural Ash Stratocaster that is now that color.
Yours looks like they did a good job of aging it to the color it would be, if it had been in smoke filled rooms for decades.

My ‘74 has NO checking of the finish. They both have a high gloss finish.

It's also got a high gloss clear coat over the tint, which the other two don't have. I like it.

You could tone it down a little by de-stringing it and using a little paint deglosser wiped on with a rag.
It wouldn't be original and would probably hurt resale value, but if you plan on keeping it, and it really bothers you, it might be worth a try.
Be warned that it's possible to screw it up too.

No. Sound and playability trump any colors I find distasteful.

I played this hideous neon pink charvel for a long time because it played and sounded so good. Man I couldn’t stand the look of it, but I was afraid to strip and repaint and lose the awesome tone. I eventually sold it, not because of the ascetics though, just was thinning the herd.

Yellowish tint just for vintage look.
The CV50P Lake placid blue and white blonde only has whiter tint compare to others china CV bass include mattfreeman SIG pbass.

The yellowish neck tint and fretboard tint look great actually with black block inlay maple fret board + black body + black pick guard . But the yellow tint neck+fret board on new indo CV50P white blonde just look weird.

Personally I like that yellowish tint not because it looks old, just like the look. I sold a bass that was bought on impulse partly due to it being short scale (never got used to it) and partly due to not liking the sunburst color..,..,

Well, I have gotten rid of the other p bass (and made a good buck on it too), but I’ll never get rid of the tele bass...though I do believe it’s time to get new tuners for it. Maybe ones that match lol.

Here's my 2 cents. I personally love that kind of tint, so it sure wouldn't bother me, and to be honest, if everything else about the bass was excellent, as in play ability and tone, then I wouldn't let the color or tint bother me... but ... if it bothers you enough to make a thread about it, then you should probably get something else. Life is to short to settle for something that doesn't pop your cork : )

I don’t like pale maple; love a nice deep tint.

That Squier looks like a Cheeto, though. Fakey. I wouldn’t fault you for moving it.

I’m assuming it’s new. Bought a PJ last year that looked orange. Not being as sensitive as you I put up with it but nearly eight months later the Orange has faded to a light brown. Just saying it might be worth the wait.
