Neck Tint Is Killing My Vibe (With Poll!)

I recently became the owner of a Classic Vibe 70's P bass, and this thing is a heck of a player and quite the tone machine. It's a great bass, but there's one small problem; the neck tint really bugs me. It's just too dang yellow! It reminds me of a Pittsburgh Steelers/penguins bass. (Pic provided for contrast to what I would call "normal" maple coloring). While I've only had it a few days, it's already got me thinking about selling it. I was excited for this bass, because I really
like the look of the Geddy Jazz, and had hoped the neck would be more that sort of maple coloring. When I first got it, the yellow was the first thing that I noticed, but I figured I would grow to like it. Alas, not yet. The tint is really making me have a hard time bonding with it. I just don't feel that warm fuzzy feeling when I look at it, that makes me want to pick it up and play it, like my other basses do. The neck tint is just killing my vibe for this classic vibe. Has anyone else had a bass that the neck tint or color just didn't work for you?

Its just the gloss clear coat that makes it looks yellow. I just took mine off. The maple is white. And yeah, I originally decided to strip my bass and refinish it because I didn't like how yellow it came off as. But, I didn't sell it, I re finished it. If you strip the clear off, and satin poly it, it will look exactly like your other ones.

Haven't gotten rid of one because of it, but I did have to hold my nose a bit when I bought it, so to speak. Same with one of my guitars.
I've gotten used to them, but neither colour has actually grown on me in a positive way.

Just the opposite here. I don't like light colored, almost white Maple necks. A Tung oil tint works for me.

I personally love the yellow-ish, darkened color of the neck lol. The super pale maple necks turn me off in the same way the artificially yellowed one does you.
But I'd give it more time to grow on ya. Especially if the bass plays and sounds the way you like. You may eventually come to appreciate its "uniqueness".

And if not, consider just replacing the neck for something that suits your tastes a little better

Nah....color of the neck won't bother me if a bass plays and sounds good. BTW, I kinda like the tinted necks.

I don't own a CV, just tried a surf green Mustang last week. I really like that tint. I own real old Fenders and know how aged looks, but I don't care. The unfinished or uncolored necks of the cheaper mexican and chinese Fender instruments look and feel somehow cheap to me while I like the way Fender Japan and Fender USA does this on the '70s reissues. It's a strange and beautifull world.

I've got that bass, put black pups in it, gold hardware, Black and Gold, great color combo.
Then again, I'm a Steeler/Penguins fan! Don't forget the Pirates, they wear the Black
and Gold as well. Let's go Bucs! 41 years and counting.

Sort of.
I didn't hate the color itself but I had a "genuine replacement" Fender 62 neck on my parts jazz bass which was pretty yellow. The body was tung oiled ash which is very white. Didn't look right together and I preferred pbass necks so I sold the neck.

My Classic 50's Lacquer has one of those Nuclear Carrot Orange necks which really turned me off at first - but it feels and plays soooo good. It's really grown on me over time to where I prefer the look of it now and the AO 50's (which is what I really wanted in the first place) seems really bland in comparison now. Plus, I mean that's the look from back then so it is what it is. YMMV

The tint looks awesome. The two plain white wood basses look like toys. Just my opinion. Can't stand plain white wood, it just looks so cheap, like a Walmart instrument.

I like tinted necks more with some colors than others, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me and in general I like tinted necks more. Gloss Black + Chrome + Tinted Maple = Rock

my first jazz when i bought it was as pale as the one on the left, now its looks like the one on the right. for me i like the one on the right the best. neither one is so different though that it would turn me off.

I'd keep it for 2 reasons... love that tint and I'm a huge Pittsburgh sports fan... a-hem, was, before all of the nonsense started.

The body color could make me pass on a bass but not the tint.

Not ever. I would never buy a bass that didn't pass the eye test.

BTW, I grew up in Pittsburgh. Go Steelers!!! Pens.....Go rebuild.... Rah! Rah! Rah!

Neck tint is fine. That single black tuner bugs the hell out of me.
