neck width dimensions, can't find procedures.

I am researching, and researching how to make my first instrument. I think i have most of the details on how to figure dimension of body, and thickness of neck etc.. however i just realized I never discovered how to taper the neck (if necessary). I assume it may be done with a jig and cut on a table saw, but is this THE WAY to do it?

No, not generally, firstly you need to know what scale length, the nut width, and string spacing at the bridge, this will help you to determine your neck taper dimensions. Using Fretfind can be a great shortcut for getting a correctly diagramed board, and with enough overhang added in that box, you can get the correct taper from behind the nut to past the 24th fret. Some of us still do it the hard way, and just draw it out on paper :D

Are you asking how to make the cuts or how to lay it out?

If you are asking how to make the cuts, I do rough taper on the band saw and final taper with the router. You could do it with a jig on the table saw but then you'll be rebuilding the headstock if you carry the taper all the way through.

Exactly^^^ I do the same using templates for specific neck tapers, depending on string number, spacing at bridge, and nut. If you don't plan to do multiple necks, you can draw it out on your blank, and use a straightedge to clean it up.
