Need a knife

Well, I looked around a little but nothing sprang up in the search.

I'm looking for a knife... its been a while since I've looked at them or bought something other than a skining knife so I'm a little rusty on brands/what to look for/etc...

What I want is something to have around while hiking as a knife is always handy... I'm looking into local laws/bylaws, but for know lets go with function. I suppose a decent gutting/skinning knife is the main goal. I'd probly like something thats light as my other knife (not in the area) is fairly heavy. I'm pretty torn on the whole serated thing as it might be useful, but I've survived without for this long and I'd guess it's harder to sharpen/maintain.

Specific suggestions would be nice, but just general pointers on things to check quality wise would be appreciated as well. Not looking for fancy or pretty, just utility here. Probly the 100 CAD range, but flexible on that. I dunno... what do you all look for while purchasing a knife?

I like my buck knife...

Speaking of knifes, wth is up with people being so afraid of them...

I swear i get yelled at work for using it like almost every day... Hmmmm, i need to cut stuff and you guys don't provide me with decent cutting tool... damn right i ma use my knife that is always in my pocket... They complain about me having one, but every time they need it they ask me to use it... People lost their minds...

Perhaps they are not afraid of the knife, per se, but of you with the knife.. :)

There have been tons of knife talk on here, you should have found tons of threads!

I suggest (if your law is that you can have up to a 6" blade concealed like in PEI), to get a Invalid Link Removed, they are pretty much the standard, and for good reason, it's like getting a fender Jazz. They are like 60 bucks canadian. If you don't go with that, I will still suggest going with a fixed blade, most of the guys on here have locking blades, fixed is where it's at, absolutely 100% no chance of failure and chopped fingers.

Could be, I need to test this theory by coming to work as not me with a knife...

Oh my dear gods . . . *laughs*

As for the chopped fingers . . . I've been using knives of both varieties (folding and fixed) for years and I've only ever cut myself with fixed-blade knives.

*blinks* I have a bad habit of alarming my friends (though my knife is missing, I think that may have been deliberate on a friend's part :P) by flipping my folder open and shut as a sort of unconscious fiddling habit.

I'd personally suggest hitting a store with a decent selection of knives and buying in person.

that's fairly close to mine.

The Buck 110 and it's variants have been popular for years. They're a solid, well made knife, no doubt about it. What I don't understand is why outdoorsmen swear by them. They are very heavy and very slippery when covered in blood or water. The handle has little or no physical features that allow it to be oriented in the hand during use. The clip point blade shape is not at all user friendly when field dressing most game. They also require two hands to open and close and lack a pocket clip so the leather belt pouch is a neccesity. Most serious hunters won't carry leather due to the smell. Anyone that rides a 4 wheeler in the woods and wears a belt pouch sheath has probably lost at least one :)

They are a classic design, there are several of them floating around my home but there are much better choices on the market today.

I got a bayonet, is that a good knife?

It's not a knife, it's a bayonet. A bayonet is ment for poking people, a knife is ment for cutting.

I don't understand why you guys on the other side of the pond are so attached to your folders - for a every-day carry-around it's a good design, but with a fixed blade you don't even have to think about the mechanism.

Legally, there are ton of restrictions on carrying fixed blade knives in the States. I know in Scandanavia, carrying a fixed blade is pretty traditional.

I might get away with carrying a folder (and even those are restricted, complicated stuff that involves the locking and opening mechanism), not so much with carrying a fixed blade, unless I'd be on a hunting trip or something.
