Need a little extra edge to your tone?

I love my P bass. I dig the smooth, root-sy vibe I get. Lately I've been wanting a bit more edge and grind for certain songs. I didn't want to install a preamp or lose the classic P sound so I decided to try one of these: Fender TBX Tone Control - eBay (item 190556178364 end time Aug-16-11 06:38:12 PDT)
It was EXACTLY what I was looking for. At the center position it sounds like stock. Turn it all the way up and I get more clarity and edge. It's not drastic, but you can definitely hear the difference in a live setting. Easy install, great results!

TBXs are cool. I have one in my Ibanez. When it's on 10 the tone control is removed from the circuit.

My only complaint is if you have your volume turned down, which I almost never do while laying, the TBX acts more like a volume control.

David, can you elaborate on this? I want to try a tbx with a PJ VVT, and I like to roll the bridge volume a little most of the time. How do you think the tbx will interact with such a setup?

Do you have a wiring diagram on the vvt?
I'm going to try some modding on a epiphone thunderbird and yes I'm a newbee on this..
The stock pups are a bit muddy to me and before I spend lots on new pups I want to try the tbx as I already have one on my "Fender power jazz bass".

again I'm a newbee on modding so when I opened my fender to use it as a guide it didn't make any sence to me.

I decided to get one of these for some edge : [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

It's not a full preamp but it does require a battery. I'm installing it with an active/passive switch so I don't lose the Precision passive sound.

What's neat is that it has 3 EQ settings. I'm looking forward to the High/Low boost with Mid scoop for some slap tones. Hopefully it works out, I couldn't find any testimonials from people that have used that sucker.

I'm strongly considering adding a PTB system on top of it so I can dial back the lows or the highs as needed. With a stacked Volume/Tone knob and a Bass knob it won't required modification to the cavity, but I will have to get a battery box installed.

Anyway, I'm sort of trying to replicate the TBX with a bit more flexibility so that's why I mentioned it.
