I currently own the line 6 Helix floor and the Line 6 StageSource L3t 3-way speaker, but, as Sam Cooke said, A Change Is Gonna Come. I ordered the Helix Stadium XL and I want to change out my amp/speaker set up. Originally, I bought the L3t, in part, because I bought into the idea that an FRFR would pair nicely with all the new sounds from my Helix floor and there was the L6 link cable and it got good reviews. It’s been about 10 years now and I’m not convinced an FRFR speaker was necessary or even desirable. More importantly, I’m tired of lugging around a nearly 60 pound cabinet. Accordingly, I want to change up my power and cabinet.
I am fully (and painfully) aware that there are thousands of “which speaker should I buy” conversations on the internet, but for various reasons I am here asking your opinion. I don’t want links to other threads covering the topic. I would like specific suggestions and hopefully a little bit as to why you are recommending the suggestion. I appreciate all the comments about subjectivity, “it depends”, and every other caveat out there. Just add your voice if you care to do so.
My main axe is a Marcus Miller 4 string. Way back in the day, I had an SWR Mini Mo Bass Amp, an SWR SM-500 Power Amp, and 2 SWR Goliath Jr. III 2x10s. I absolutely loved that set up and sound in terms of weight and tone. However, all of that gear got stolen and when I went to replace everything, I found the idea of the “new” line 6 helix floor to be an interesting and fun option over the more cumbersome analog workings of my SWR set up. I thought I might be able to tweak the helix to get me close to the SWR set up and then I’d have all the other limitless options to go along with it. I’m sure it’s probably something I’m doing (or not doing), but the “analog” sounds from the helix models just don’t sound as warm as my SWR set up did. I’ve seen tons of YouTube videos suggesting “you can’t tell the difference” but I can. Or at least I think I can. Overall, I really do enjoy the helix and am excited about the Stadium, but I don’t feel that way about the L3t.
I would just get 2 SWR Goliath Jr. III 2x10s but those are 55 pounds each and I just don't want to lug that much. I was thinking maybe one 1 Goliath style (2x10) and one 1x15 cabinet to handle the synth bass sounds from the helix. Used equipment is fine, prefer modular/lighter components, would love to stay around $1,500 for amp and cabs. My general playing conditions are jams at studios, but there is the occasional show at the Roxy, Troubadour, Whiskey, and other L.A. main stays. I am not a rock player and more likely to be inside a funk or r&b or jazz jam. I do not play with a pick. The adjectives for sounds I would throw out there are tight, clear, warm, and punchy. In addition to the Marcus side of my playing, I am a huge fan of Pino and his sound.
