Need a P2 5 String Soapbar Recommendation!

I thought the dual coils come wired either in parallel or series (and so can’t do a switch)? FYI, I’m pretty much clueless on pickup wiring, so bear with me.

Nope, the Bart dual coils can readily accommodate switching using an On-On-On switch. I've got them in five instruments wired up with series/parallel/single on each pickup. Works great. Here's the diagram from the manufacturer.

Most dual coils are switchable. Of those mentioned, only Aguilars I believe come hardwired (in series). Nordstrand optimizes the winding for series or parallel operation, but if you’re gonna use a single coil mode, parallel wind is typically recommended.

Delano* and Aero also make P2 size dual coils. I think you can also get Fodera Duncans from Fodera. These might be the closest to NYCs.

*except theirs use blades, not dual pole piece design… not sure if that matters to you (and it does sound slightly different). Delano Times Square model does have those exposed mini-blades tho…

Nordstrand dual coils are the closest off the shelf P2 size DC.

Aguilar's are not switchable, and are series only.

If you go Bart, the classics can be very bright when in parallel, and the blade design with ceramic magnets will not sound/attack quite like the individual Alnico poles of the NYC's.

The Nordy Zen blades won't sound like the SD NYC's due to pole design and magnet material.

The Delano times square can get close, but I don't think you can get them in a narrow enough string spacing.

Aero's will get you there for sure.

Ulyate, Lake, and Mama pickups are others that make a DC pickup similar to the Nordy DC and SD NYC.

The Nordstrand DCs come in a parallel or series wind. That is, you can switch them from one to the other but the parallel has been wound so it will sound great when in parallel mode and the series great in series

I can not find this information on their website, would you care to elaborate? Which Delano's are blade based? All the hidden pole pieces models? All the SBC(E) series? JSBC as well?
Come to think of it, I have no idea what's inside an Xtender.

good question… I don’t know where I read it, and maybe I’m wrong. But typically closed pickups use blades, I think. It makes sense to show the pole pieces to help align with strings… don’t have to worry about that with blades…

Xtenders are indeed more a mystery, but from what I read and heard, I’d say they’re dual coils too.

OP mentioned that his Icon has Narrow string spacing - 17.5mm I’m guessing. Nordstrand Dual Coils come Standard for 19mm spacing, but a custom spacing can be ordered.

I would highly recommend the Nordstrand’s. With regard to which winding, I’d go with the Parallel wind version, and is the recommended “Lakland” wiring - Neck Coil/Parallel/Bridge Coil…that will allow for consistent volume between Parallel and SC modes. This will also give you Inner Coils/Outer Coils, like a Stingray HH has in its 5-way switching modes.

+1 on the Bart CBC's. I had a pair in an Ibby BTB I used to own. They are clear, quiet, and had just the right amount of presence without being too edgy or growly. Of course, if the OP is looking for a different tone, then a different set of pickups may be indicated. These were great to support a band. I simply didn't have another bass to put them in or I would have yanked the pickups and kept them instead of selling them with the bass.

Question: what if you use 19mm with the narrower string spacing? I can get a good deal on a used set of 19mm dual coils, hence the question.
