Need a Pedal

Hey everyone, I had my first gig last night, it was freakin awesome. We had a good amount of people show up and the crowd was really into it. I have a couple of bass solos in some songs and I was looking into getting some sort of pedal that could make me stand out a little at those parts. Does anybody have any ideas? Also, I was looking into some sort of distortion or overdrive, not sure what it's called as i'm new to these effects. Something like Flea uses in his intro to Around the World at Slane Castle ( ).

So I'm looking for an eq boost of some sort, and a distortion of some sort as well.

Flea uses a BOSS ODB-3. If you are going to buy one try it first, it's a VERY harsh distortion and you might hate at first (I only use mine for electronica/industrial music). The best thing you can do is try a bunch of overdrive and fuzz pedals before buying anything. Dirt pedals are something too personal to make a blind purchase :ninja:

Flea didn't use an ODB-3 on the recording, so that's a little misleading since that's probably where most people know that song. He does use one live, however.

There's a ton of choices in terms of overdrives out there that will add a midrange boost to your tone and help you cut through. Definitely try some out, and do a search. There's tons of threads that'll probably answer your questions.

Hi I wanted to get a driven or even fuzz sound to stand out on certain tracks I ended up getting an Ashdown (James Lomenzo) Hyperdrive. Here's a bit about it.

In the LoMenzo Hyper Drive, a band of frequencies within the midrange of the bass signal is filtered out and the distortion effect is added only to this band. The filtered frequencies can be ‘tuned’ to the precise range that gives the optimum effect. The degree of distortion available is variable from a subtle break up to huge overdrive, enabling a new range of extreme effects for bass to be created. The distortion effect can then be mixed with the original dry bass signal to maintain a powerful, full-bodied bass tone with distortion overtones.

I also use a Boss bass limiter/enhancer. This gives me a quick stomp to up my level when required.

i got a boss EQ acouple of months back and it was an 'always-on' pedal. but then i got my VT bass and that became the alwayts on pedal to shape my tone. now i use the eq as a light boost in volume and low end. works just fine as that.

however if you push it too far it does overdrive (but thats only if you push really far)


as for you overdrive pedal i agree with everyone else. its a personal taste.
saying that i dont have an overdrive/fuzz/dist pedal and dont see a need for one.
