If it were me (and it’s not) I would find and buy a Tacoma Thunderchief. You may need to sell a few things you don’t use often, but those things augmenting the $500 you already have should get you one.

Yeah, you've obviously played the wrong acoustic basses.Several years back I was in the hunt for an acoustic bass. I played every one I could find, and to my ears none of them produced a satisfying sound. I then went to looking for semi hollow electric basses. I found an Epiphone Viola, a Voxton Gibson 335 copy bass, and another semi hollow whose brand name escapes me right now. Each of these basses came close to the sound I wanted, but I kept looking. (I did buy them and still have all three). Then I stumbled across an Epiphone EB 1 fretless. This is the closest to an upright sound that I have found (except for the Uke basses that are popular right now).
Some time later I found a Dean acoustic bass cheap enough that I bought it. Yes it's a bass, and yes it can be heard if there are no other instruments playing, but it has a terrible pickup and will never cut it in a live band situation. I know some folks love acoustic basses, but I'm not in that camp. If you want to be heard in a live band you need to be amped, and I have not heard an acoustic bass amped that satisfies that need for me.
Thump on,

Forgive me...the Martin you wanted is the B-15E. And in general Martin ABGs are very fine, as long as you evade the smaller bodies.the american made martin such as the d15e acoustic w/ fishman preamp,eq is THE worthy contender...ps, they smell soooo good...just like your hairdresser knows for sure, only martin players know!...ss
Tapes will give you a great sound if you have a good pickup. Paging @kesslari please. Mr Kesslari to the desk, please, and bring your Phoenix.Anyone here use TI Acousticore strings with fretless? I've got LaBella black tapes on my ABG and I'm wondering if those will produce a better piezo sound. The tapes are great unplugged but obviously can't do much with that.
The hawk speaks truely.Yeah, you've obviously played the wring acoustic basses.

Thanks for the advice. Never thought about practicing on the couch!!Fender makes a good ABG that’s not too expensive. I agree with the genius of @jd56hawk that finding one you like plugged in gives you an additional tool. I love the way mine sounds plugged in.
Remember they are big and you need to adjust your playing style a little. Just the picking arm. It’s a cool thing to have at your side. I’m watching football and Sic’em Bears!!! And just dinking with mine right now.
Some would say it isn’t really practice. Noodling is still valuable. Thanks for the advice. Never thought about practicing on the couch!!

Grab and go if you have an idea you want to play through or if there is something in a song that is stumping you. I use mine quite often for that.
And you can get great new sounds in recording or live. There’s no reason not to get one.
I own quite a few and they're all different.I'm thinking about buying an acoustic bass. It would be my first acoustic bass. I've been playing for well over 25 years. I know never have owned one. What got me thinking about it, was using it for practice. I figured it would be easier just to pick it up and get after it.
So sorry to ramble any pros or con's about it. My budget is under $500 any decent ones out there for that budget. FYI my main basses are EBMMHH 4 STRING and a Fender P BASS.
Thanks for any advice...
Always nice to see someone who gets it!For a variety of health reasons I started playing an ABG exclusively about 1+ years ago. I’m a retired professional bassist that still plays 75-100 gigs a year, so I’m a bit picky about what kind of instrument I play. And this ABG is unlike anything else I’ve ever used.
I have found out that I’m, apparently, a non-typical acoustic bassist. I only perform plugged in, I use heavy tension LaBella flats, I play through a Radial BassBone DI into a powered PA speaker, my bass is a Breedlove Solo Jumbo 34” scale big-bodied bass, and I’ve never, ever played sitting around a campfire (it seems to be a right-of-passage in order to play acoustic bass). So take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
Breedlove basses with a CE designation are MIC, therefore relatively cheap compared to many other instruments. Due to my use of heavy gauge flat wound strings I don’t have a lot of unamplified volume, but it’s more than sufficient when playing alone at home. I understand the bronze strings give more volume, but I personally dislike the tone of them. The piezo in the Breedlove is fine, but I’m eq’ing it through the BassBone, can’t offer a lot of opinion on the value of it without the EQ.
For me, the full scale, big body version of an ABG makes complete sense, YMMV. And Breedlove is an excellent compromise between the expensive “cadillac” ABG’s and the super low-end stuff ….
