Need Advice on Cheap 6 Strings (first post)

I've only been playing bass for a little while but I'd really like to pick up a 6 string at a resonable price. Some of the ones I've been watching for on ebay/craigslist are the Peavey Fury, Peavey Grind, and Ibanez Soundgear (I know there are a few different 6's in thins line but I'm not familiar with the differences between them). I've seen a few Furies come and go but there is an SR496 on ebay and a Peavey Grind bass for $325 on craigslist right now. The Ibanez has more than a day left so I'm guessing it will get quite a bit higher. Sorry if I sound like a newb but it's just because I am. I've been looking around here for a while now reading reviews and such and I figured this would be a good place to get some advice.

So anyway... how do you guys feel about the basses I've mentioned here and what other suggestions might you have.

I've personally been looking at the sr706 because it is very sexy indeed.

But I've just been in the thread about the Douglas 6 strings, and man, they seem great for the money. I found some reviews, and there was only good things said about them. And for under $200, you can't really go wrong.

Welcome to talkbass!

All the basses you mentioned are going to be nice. If you're patient you may find an older used Peavey USA Axcelerator 6 for $400 or under. I did. It will completely smoke everything in the price range, but may not be your style, I don't know. If you insist on new all these are good choices. Keep a look out for a Dean Edge 6, it's as good as the others you've mentioned. Also, take a look at the Rondo Music imports www.rondomusic.com .

"you can't really go wrong" is an interesting way to put it right now. there are WEB-846's at Rondo for $109 right now. They usually run $179, so you could conceivably get MORE for it than you paid if you decided to sell it. I'd be on one right now if they had any at that price in lefty. :(

EDIT: whoa, they snuck one in on me! Hurry up paycheck!

I own a Peavey Fury VI and I like it well enough, solid bass with plenty of tone. I've played an Ibanez SR506 and I REALLY like its playability. I like the thinner neck and close string spacing on it as compared to the Peavey. The tone is different on the SR506, seems to be designed more for pop/slap. The Fury is more of an all purpose axe, I think. As for price, you'll find a used Fury for under $500, maybe less if you are patient. I don't see the SR506 or SR706 basses going for anything close to that, more like $600-800.

You can also take a peek at the BTB Series from Ibanez, it's 35" scale, so it's got a slightly different feel, but the spacing is a little wider, so it's more comfy for someone moving from a 4 string (IMHO). I picked one up here about 2 years ago, and absolutely love it, it's gig-worthy no doubt, and it's kinda cool looking.

+1 on the WEB-846. I just got one. Great bang for the buck!!

It is my experience that the Ibanez laminated necks, with dual truss-rods are quite stable. The fretwork also tends to be very good. I have an SR496 that is a few years old (4-5).

I've heard good things about Peaveys, but never had one.

The lower-priced basses will cut corners on the neck stability and fretwork. Only you can decide the trade-offs, though.

That's just silliness! :eek:

This is the first thing on this entire site that I can actually afford easily :P I think I'd need a credit card though, and I don't have one...

Well I'm going to be Devil's advocate for a second.. Your just getting into bass and already want to jump to 6 strings?? Have you ever picked up a 6 string bass?? You might consider a 5 first to get more familiar with an extra string. I understand your interested in lower end instruments but you might take the time to master a 4 banger before taking the all mighty plunge..I've been playing on and off for 10 or so years and still find myself migrating back to 4 stringers (My music preference dictates this)

Anyho..good luck lots of good advice to be had..

I'm surprised that I didn't get a bunch of these types of posts sooner... haha. I just feel like im running out of room sometimes with a 4. Anyway, although I'm probably not going to take it, I appreciate your advice and concern. Got my eye on a few Ibanez's ending tomorrow. If I can snag one cheap enough I think I'm gonna get a 506 or a 496.

I just unpacked my Web846 TG. I'm impressed. It was in tune and intonated as well. I had to raise the action on 2 strings to kill a sl;ight buzz and the intonation allens were loose. But after that? No obvious bugs. I had it delivered to work so I'll have to wait till I get it home to fire it up. But ou of the box I'm glad I went with it. it's the Trans green btw. Once again I wasn't sold on a six always was curious, but normally they're hugely priced. At $109.USD? this is a clean shoot.
