I don't know whether to go with a combo or a cab? i'm not looking to spend a load of money, but i do want a fair amount of power, and a good growly tone. any suggestions? brands? give me some response. i'll either take ya'll advice, or i'll buy a fender bassman amp. that's the one i'm thinking about buying. any help would be appreciated! Bryan
Combo's....for me, it comes down to two. The Eden Metro, and the Peavey BAM. If I ever went back to a combo, it would be the Eden hands down. I doubt your limited budget will allow you the chance to buy one though. Too bad..... There are other quality combos that you will surely read about if you do a search here in the amps forum. -Mike
How much power do you consider a "fair amount"? To me, that means more than 500 watts or so; but I have a 160 watt amp, a 400 watt amp and a 2400 watt amp... It's all relative. What do you hope to do...play at home all the time, play in a small band, a loud band, etc.? I would have never considered a combo but bought a new (seemingly unused demo) SWR WM12 at a recent Guitar Center list sale for just $250. While it sounds very good solo, paired with one of my 1x15s it blows me away...
There is a thread already addressing the pros and cons which should be a great help to you. I personally prefer a powerful, lightweight combo. It's flexible enough for rehearsals and gigs. I use the GK 700RBII/112 NEO and would highly recommend it to anyone. Here is the threads link: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=163735
