NEED ADVICE, P BASS OR STINGRAY?

Hi,
I've been playing electric bass for about 5 years. I currently own a american jazz bass and a mexican p bass. I am in the proccess of deciding my next investment. I want to get either an american p bass or a music man sting ray. I play mostly funk, jazz, blues, and reggae. I pritty much just jam. I was wondering what you guys thought of these basses. Which one do you prefer and why. I am currently leaning towards the stingray.

you have a J, so you can get 80% of a P tone...

I'd also consider neck profile: Which bass feels better to you, J or P? If J, get a Sterling; If P, then get a stingray. Why? Because they have distinct tone that is different from Fender (which you already have covered) and are nice basses.

I'd also consider getting a fretless instead. It's never to early to start woodshedding on THAT.

I own all the basses in question - P, J, as well as a SR and Sterling - based on your situation I think a Sterling would probably give you the widest range of sounds you don't have while allowing you to get the same familiar neck feel as your J. The Ray is a bit of work to play because it's so heavy and can be limited on the amount of sounds you get out of it depending on the PUP configuration you choose. My two main workhorses are the 51P Reissue and the Sterling.

I'll second that. I currently play Sterlings exclusively,and don't even consider changing anytime soon.I retired my 73 Jazz years ago after playing a Music Man.The single H Music Man basses just get the job done. Go for it.

I'm in the exact same situation and I've decided on a Stingray.

I have a Fender Highway 1 jazz and a Japanese Fender re-issue 70 p-bass. I've upgraded the latter with a Badass Bridge II and it sounds great! So as mentioned earlier, you can upgrade your P-bass and go for the Stingray. It gives you more tonal versatility.

You know... I LOVE my p-type bass and loved the tone of the Stingray 5 I had. I just could not get used to the tighter string spacing on the Stingray so it had to go. Too bad - it SOUNDED great! If they were to build one with a nut at 1 7/8 and 3/4 spacing at the bridge I would get another in a heartbeat!
