Need Direction

Hey guys new hear to TalkBass. I been playing guitar for 20 years and decided I need to try a different instrument bass was something I always wanted to pick up. I realize this question has been asked a zillion times so hear it is one more time.

I recently bought myself a new bass and I need to buy an amp. I have been renting a Traynor 112 for two months. It’s a decent amp dosent blow me away but I don’t hate it. I have spent time researching what my favourite artist use and it’s all over the place the majority are using big heads and cabinets which I don’t need. So I guess if you guys can point me in a direction it would be much appreciated.

Bass- ESP 5 string neck through EMG pickups
Use- Practice and perhaps when I get better rehearsal with friends.
Tone- Modern sounding, I listen to extreme metal (Cattle Decapitation, Cannibal Corpse etc.) but saying that my playing level is not there yet (hopefully one day it will be). I have been noodling with some Metallica,Pantera,Slayer,GNR classic rock as I learn.
Amp features- Aux in, headphone jack, effects in and out.
Type-Combo or head and cab I’m open.

Chances are I will be putting a distortion/fuzz pedal along with some type of compression pedal. So does a guy shoot for a real clean sounding amp and switch in the distortion pedal for the times I want to sound dirty or to achieve a more modern tone do you use a more versatile amp able to achieve a dirty tone and cleans.

In the guitar world it seems a lot easier to achieve a great tone. Just plug into a Dual Rec, 5150, 6505 any modern amp and the tone is there. I am finding bass is more complicated or I am just over complicating things perhaps.

Sorry for the long exhausting post.

Well, my two cents given your particular needs would be, consider finding a used Helix and get every amp model and everything you would want as a guitarist, and , because by the time you get a bass amp, compression, distortion...you're gonna be halfway there money wise. A cheaper alternative would be the new Boss GT1B, or the sans amp fly rig.
also, if you're gonna be a bass player, you're gonna have to show up early or on time, lol.

thanks guys appreciate all the info will take me a month to go through all these options :)

Preliminary I am Leaning towards a head and cab for the reason I will be most likely rehearsing with buddy’s later on and be able to upgrade easier.

So far just listening to you tube videos I am liking the Mesa D800+ Has a thick full tone to it. It has the fx loop headphone jack and aux in which I was wanting. Hopefully will make it down to some music stores and plug in my bass and see what sounds good too me.

Someone mentioned using guitar gear I pretty much liquidated anything I wasent using all I have left is my 6505 and a 2x12 cabinet.

Somebody wanted a pic of the bass here she is.

He knows where there's a smokin' deal on an SVT 3 Pro and 4x10 cab!!!!!!

An SVT 3 pro and 4x10 wont be light, but you won't ever need any more than that, and when you plug in and play through the svt, you will quickly recognize those bass tones in your favorite songs; its the standard by which others are judged, especially with a fender in front. Gets close to the classic 8o pound Ampeg head. I personally used the 3 pro through two classic 1x15 cabs, and it was beautiful rig. I only parted with it because of weight, and I went to the markbass 2x10 combo. The MB combo may also be all you would ever need, but it can be pricey, but the whole thing weighs less than the svt 3 pro head. I mention weight because all gear weighs twice as much after the gig!
