Need Help - Bass Rig sounds Boomy/dull/lifeless

What are you setting your pickups to? Post a pic of your amp settings, and describe how you set the bass.

That shuttle should be versatile, and a jazz bass is universal imo. Something must be set wrong.

You aren't doing the smiley face eq are you? Boosting 500-800 might help.

It took me a lot of fussing to get a sound like you are after, just a bit off on the eq changes "cutting thru"into harsh.

I would start with new strings, I suggest elixers, they last a long time.

Then remove all effects at first, set everything flat. Maybe search for amp settings on your manufacturer s forum or website, swr manuals have several settings, but those won't help . Go easy , and defeat the eq as you go to check in.

A trick I use is to find the eq spots that make it sound worse by cranking that, and then cut those freq. Does that make sense?

Try Turn your bridge pickup all up full, tone up full, and neck at about three or four. I can't tell what that bass really sounds like on my speakers, but that's my guess.

Dumb question, but are you using a compressor? That helps.

Ok. I would set all the tone knobs on your amp flat, get rid of all the pedals between the bass and the amp. I would also recommend you put a set of D'Addario pro steels on your bass, and play with the balance between pick ups, favoring the bridge, and pulling just a little neck pup in.
Ha, pretty much same thing I said but more concise, missed that one!
