Hi there!

I'm thinking about getting a new phaser pedal. Budget of $150 and less, no need to be expensive. New (because I wanna be able to order online and return it if I'm not happy).

I currently use a Small Stone. While I like the texture of the sound, I feel the controls are quite limited. In brief, the colour switch gives me either too much or not enough "swoosh" and the absence of a depth knob is also limiting. I was feeling similarly about the Small Clone until the Bass Clone was released, solving all the issues I had.

So I'd like to find a pedal that would give me more flexibility, with a warm analog tone, good on bass.

suggestions?

I would love if EHX gave the Small Stone the Bass Clone treatment.

As it is now I use the Behringer VP1 Vintage Phaser, which is a pretty accurate clone of the original big box Smal Stone, the new ones doesn't sound quite the same, and not nearly as good, even if EHX claims it is the same circuit, can't be, the new ones doesn't get nearly as pronounced with the color on, and it is like the sweep is set to deep simply cutting out completely leaving a hole in the signal at the wave's extreme positions, the original didn't do that, and the feedback/resonance not quite high enough, compared to the original.

I love what the Behringer do and I was through several phasers, some more xpensive ones as well, before I settled for that, I've found ways around the volume drop when engaged, unfortunately that's the same issue the original Small Stone had, as well as brightening the very dark swirl a bit, but placing a light overdrive after it, but nothing quite get as pronounced and gooey as the original Small Stone (and then that Behringer).

Sorry, I can't help you, I am quite satisfied with the really pronounced swirl with the color switch on, but I hope for both of us that EHX will make our dreams come through and make a Small Stone to the exact original specs, only with the volume drop fixed and with added controls similar to what they did with the Bass Clone to the Small Stone.

I know I would get it as soon as it was released if they did.

I have an EHX Small Stone (original!), and I've loved it for years. A couple of years ago I picked up (from a member here) an MXR Custom Shop Script Phase 90, and it puts me exactly in the perfect spot I want to be. I heartily second @Chamber 's recommendation.

I went for a Source Audio Lunar. It's the most analogue sounding digital phaser that I've tried and it sounds great. It's got a bass retain control that blends only the lower frequencies. It's also compatible with any of the Source Audio modulation models so I can download any of the hundreds of available Chorus, rotaries, flanger etc and replace the 6 stock patches.
I've also bought a set of 4 after market knobs from Amazon and really pimped it out:

I agree with you about silver after having them both on there. I got the black with the intention of having them for the Ultrawave, but had to try! lol Silver it is.

Got them on Amazon... I was ordering a couple other "quality of life" items for my home practice setup (like a longer TRS cable so I could put my C4's expression pedal on the floor), so tagged these on just because.

I've got silver ones on my C4, these blue ones on my Lunar and black ones on my Aftershock. However...the gold ones on Intelligent Filter just rocks with the Purple case!

MXR M95? It has a switch for older and new tones. I believe the price would be in your ballpark. It's also a small pedal, if that helps.

+1 on this. Tiny, available everywhere, sounds good, surprising range of sounds despite the simple controls, reasonably priced. I never felt like it would need a clean blend - for me, it just works as-is.

I bought one about a year ago "just to give it a try" and it has quickly become one of my favourite effects. I find It's a nice alternative to envelope filter to funkify your lines.

Agreed on the BOSS PH-2. It's got a lot of range as an analog phaser. Just remember to put an EQ after it to bump up the lows that it takes out. As analog pedals go, they're still inexpensive, though note that pre-1997 ones use a 12V ACA connection if you're going to feed them from a power supply (Correctly powering your old Boss pedal (ACA vs PSA simplified))

Sorry for thread sidejack- but just followed the links and got gold and black for Spectrum and Aftershock, respectively. Wednesday.

As far as a phaser, I remain plenty pleased with the options in the SA Orbital Modulator.

Not certain about Collider aesthetic mods yet.

+2 (or +3? Whatever we're up to) for an MXR Phase 95, although I will qualify that be saying that when I think "this part would sound good with some phase shifting" I'm almost always thinking run-of-the-mill, meat&potatoes, generic, clichéd phase shifting...and as soon as I start to think "this part would sound good with something similar to phase shifting only with a bit more [insert descriptive euphemism here]" I generally stop looking to off-the-shelf phase shifters to achieve that sound and instead look at more full-featured (or esoteric) modulation devices.

So for my needs the Phase 95 gives me exactly what I expect from a phase shifter, with a little bit of useful variety, but really nothing more. In that sense it's perfect: Want Phase Shifting? Step On Orange Box. Want Something Else? Don't Step On Orange Box.

Don't know how much the Southampton Utility Knife goes for new, but used, break it down on a cost-per-effect basis and you've got a very affordable phaser that sounds good, and some other modulations... Less than a C-note per effect.

Buy used off the TB GASsifieds, and if you don't like it then sell on the TB GASsifieds.

Not sure what issues you've had, but the new one with the psych paint job seems that - I love it.
