Need help on cabs for metal

Man, maybe its just me but georgestrings, do you not get what IMO means? Its an opinion, OP asked for suggestions, let people suggest with their opinions and the talkbass world goes round. Your simply giving your account on gear as well, great, you like mesa, we get it.

Also your experience with "SVT810e, PH810, and Megoliath in a loud metal gig setting" ... made me laugh. Really thats why your an expert on the matter, you have played in LOUD metal settings... As we would say in my metal band - Well there's your problem - I don't know why your attempting to rip on someone's opinion who actually has some earned respect on tb, your not contributing anything to the conversation anymore because you come across as someone looking to prove something about himself rather than about gear... My suggestion would not be to compensate by having the loudest most metal cab.. and stop being such a dick

To the OP, the best gear for metal by far is the gear designed specifically for metal. You can tell which gear is designed for metal because all the manufactures tell you in the specs for the gear. Its usually height, width, depth, genre. Just make sure both your head and cab are the same genre rating.

In all seriousness though, you'd be better off deciding what tone/specs etc your looking for rather than looking for a 'cab for metal'. metal in itself is so vast and even in a specific metal genre you will find many different sounds that will work, find what works for you not your genre of music.

You've insulted my tastes numerous times in recent memory...here's a couple glaring examples:
(...)

I had quite an interest in this thread until JimmyM got involved. BTW +1 to Mesa Powerhouse - great cab for metal.

JimmyM - why can't you simply accept the fact that you don't know everything. Nobody ever does. Most of the threads you were responding to end up in a rant if somebody disagrees with your opinion.

You have a few trusty lieutenants here ready to joing the choir. That certainly gives you confidence, but doesn't make you right.

Play your metal on an Ampeg if you like, but stop treating everybody else like idiots. Your comments like "I was doing XXX when you were YYY" are just plain lame.

By all means, show me where I said any such thing about you - because I'm saying right here that you're lying about that...

By your own words, you haven't played the other cabs - how difficult is it for you to understand why you'd be criticized for making a recommendation when you admitted that you've ONLY played the Ampeg 810???

- georgestrings

You are correct george. It was someone else that made that comment... I owe you an apology for that.... But in the op's 1st post he mentioned being interested in an ampeg 810, correct? Well i happen to own one and use it on a daily basis.... I gave my opinion of the ampeg 810e and then you basically tell every one in internet land that i don't know what i'm talking about..... kinda ego-ish to me but whatever.... I have learned not to argue with people who think they know everything..... It's kinda like beating dead horse ya know

I would go 15's or 12's.

+ 1

12's might be your ideal compromise, OP. You get more mids, which = more cut, with the 12's as opposed to a 15" or 10" set of speakers. There is a lot to do with the cab as well, but I'm speaking in general terms concerning the speakers.

Replacing a set of 6 or 8 10" speakers can get very costly very fast as opposed to 2x15's or 4x12's, I would consider that before buying your cab. The best thing to do is play your head through the cabs and if you can, get your buddies to play loud as well to see how the cab fairs in a hostile environment. What may sound great in the store, can be completely useless once you have two guitarists and a drummer going.

Just found this thread again, to the OP's question from a while back, the NV610 works wonderfully with tube amps. That's what I use and love. You won't really find anyone slamming the NV610 because it's just an awesome cab all around. Maybe not ideal for everyone, but whenever I play through my rig, it's just like, "THAT's how a bass should sound!"

In answer to the OP, the Ampeg 810 is a classic cab that's widely used for many genres, including metal. As well, it has the advantage of being widely available used for reasonable prices.

The Mesa 810 and 610 would also probably work splendidly. I would also consider their 412.

Likewise, the Bergantino NV610 has a very good reputation and so does their NV412.

All of those are good and really it just comes down to which specific cab you like most and how much money you're looking to spend on a cab.

Hello guys,

Ampeg 610 or 810
Mesa Boogie Powerhouse 610 or 810
SWR Goliath Senior or Megoliath
Bergantino NV610
EBS Proline 610 or 810
EBS Neoline 810
Gallien Krueger Neo 810
Schroeder 610L

The neodymium speakers cabs are much lighter, that is really good for me as I tour a lot. But I have no experience of those neo cabs, and I have been told the neo speakers sounds modern. Would you please give some suggestions?

Thanks very much!:bassist:

What is easy to transport for you? Do you have a car big enough to fit an 810? Bust out the tape measure if you need to find out.

The Ampeg 810 is something Alex Webster treads on often as do the majority of metal bands out there. The limiting factor of the 810e though - it does not have much versatility. You get the Ampeg tone and not much else. Works for a lot of people though! It cuts through on stage for sure.

Someone had commented to pick something that gives you the sound you want and go for it. Probably the best piece of advise on there. ANY of those cabs can work in a death metal band. It just depends on what tone you want to get.

I am glad you are looking at 810's for a metal band and not some 210 and 15 setup. I would suggest you consider two 410's in case you get on a smaller stage with PA support. An 810 could be overkill in some situations. It would be the more expensive route though.

Neo loaded cabs do sound different - I swear the midrange sounds hollow and more nasally on a NEO loaded cab versus a ceramic. That's what I hear......

The Schroeder 610L - I have played two other Schroeders and both cabs have WAYYYYY too much midrange in the tone. There is not much low end either. They cut through like a knife though, but the tone is a bit ugly.

Try out as much gear as you can and see what happens. Try out the 410 versions of the cabs you are looking at to see what the 810 model COULD sound like. Finding an 810 cab in the store is tough for sure. The Ampeg 810e is typically the only one you can find.

Good luck

Maybe slightly OT, but Alex Webster uses SWR gear, at least sometimes. Here's a picture to prove it! (from @AlexCannibal, his twitter feed).

Paulo Jr. of Sepultura was using a SWR head and Megagoliath 810 too. He had been using Ampeg gear for years...

They must changing the speakers out or something. My experience with a SWR 810 was just awful.

Thank you, WIlliam S.

Magic Papa, you obviously have me confused with some other a-hole on here. I'm the person on here who says play what you want and have fun and quit trying to make everyone like what you like. So I have to shrug my shoulders and give you a blank look.

I think most metal guys can agree, there is no one tone for metal. Look at the range in tones from geezer, Steve Harris, lemmy, Korn, overkill, meshuggah... Now if I was to say, what is the stereotypical metal sound, I might say swr/hartke, with ibanez or stingray bass.

My suggestion to you would be to go back and read the post that started this whole thing, because somehow, I don't think you did...

For example:

"Also your experience with "SVT810e, PH810, and Megoliath in a loud metal gig setting" ... made me laugh."

Hey, genius - the OP actually asked about those specific cabs, in that specific situation - what part of that didn't you understand??? Instead of calling me names, maybe you should learn to read...

Is it just me, or do you like to insult everybody that has different opinions than you?
