Need help on cabs for metal

Thank you, WIlliam S.

Magic Papa, you obviously have me confused with some other a-hole on here. I'm the person on here who says play what you want and have fun and quit trying to make everyone like what you like. So I have to shrug my shoulders and give you a blank look.

Yeah?, not really. Also I don't think calling anybody an a-hole necessarily goes well with the "blank look" approach.

What I'm saying is that you tend to get quite assy about what some people are saying completely unnecessarily. Some people can get a bit cynical or cheeky - so what? It really doesn't take much to wind you up.

Also what I'm saying is that while you probably justly claim some territory in the bass playing field - you certainly cannot claim all of it.

As somebody asked before me - JimmyM - are you a death metal connoisseur? Please elaborate if so.

To the OP this is the sort of question you should ask the folks @ the "Big Cabs Club" about. Every sort of (Tech)Death, Goregrind, Black, (Funeral)Doom, Thrash, Speed, Heavy, etc. metal is played on cabs owned by members of the club. 327 dues-paying members so far, check it out, though I don't think anyone has any Vader cabs there.

Anyone have a Vader cab or two?? Speaking of Vader, here are some nice tunes from them to calm the nerves around here:

Bah...like it matters whether I know the names of the members in the bands. I've heard plenty of death metal. I know what sounds most of them go for. And you know what? The sounds they get are as varied as any other genre. And I also know that most of them like to play loud. You think I don't know what to get to be loud as balls? Do you really think someone has to be a death metal connoisseur to know that you need a head with some wattage and a big cab or two?

Srsly now...let's not exaggerate the knowledge required to pick out a rig for death metal or doom. Anything listed in the OP's poll will work as long as HE likes it. I'm just saying what I would like if I were to put a death metal rig together. The idea that I'm not qualified to have an opinion just because I play oldies now is absolutely asinine.

You don't need to be a connoisseur to have an opinion, but saying that the volume is what everybody is after in metal is like me saying that the only things required for playing jazz are turtleneck sweater and a funny hat. People gotta ridicule that.

This reminds me about an argument I had some time ago with some "highly pro" drummer who professed that he didn't need to learn any of "my" songs becaus all "my" songs were in 4/4 and hence were too primitive and he already knew them all.

Consequently he couldn't play any of them and we had to give him the boot. :D

So simplification isn't always the best.

Barefaced is releasing the '69er, which is a pretty interesting reinvention of the classic fridge. Check out the specs and details here. Seems like it'll handle everything the SVT-2PRO will produce, have a considerable dispersion advantage over other cabs mentioned here, and weighs in at only 65 lbs. Unfortunately, it's brand new, and I doubt we'll be seeing any reviews for a while. Just thought I'd throw it out there for Alex's well-respected engineering and its unusually low weight and high performance.

Now you're just plain lying. Listen, you go right ahead and play metal on a tiny little cab. If you have a big enough PA, you can do anything you want, including no amp at all. But I've yet to see a metal band that didn't like to be loud. Some are louder than others, but I've never once seen a metal band whose goal it was to play really quietly. If they don't want it from the stage, they want it in the PA.

So look, just stop it. You've apparently got some unknown problem with me, and considering I don't have a clue who you are, I'm not sure where I went wrong here. I guess you're offended because I know a few things? Are you one of those folks who dislikes people who know things?

OK, no worries. I made my point. People can read your posts, they can read mine and decide for themeselves.

BTW. I also have no clue who you are. Checked your profile, looks like you are into vintage stuff, nothing even remotely suggests metal from your influences, so I'm not sure where you are getting your experience from.

I don't dislike people who know stuff. I read more than I write for that matter. I wonder whether this is the case for you.

"Blabbity blabbity boo..I wonder whether this is the case for you."

Well whatever. My advice that any of those 810 cabs would work but I like the Ampeg 810 was so far off the mark, huh? Yeah, you never see Ampeg 810's being used in metal. And I guess the fact that I play mostly oldies these days means I could never ever listen to or play any other kind of music, or even begin to understand what goes on in death metal. Yeah, that's special music, and only special bass players who know the secret death metal club handshake know what it takes to put together a rig for it.

OK, you're right. OP, ignore all my horrible advice and do what Magic Papa tells you because he knows the secret handshake.

The ampeg 610 and 810 are pretty much the same price, I never understood that... anyways

Neo speakers are great, but I don't know the durability on them.

I can tell you that most metal players I know that use picks prefer the ampeg cabs, but most metal players I know that use their fingers prefer mesa or GK.

The Ampeg 810E and 610HLF are very different cabs. The 810E is a sealed, cab with strong mid/upper bass and low mids, whereas the 610HLF is a ported cab with more of an emphasis on the actual low lows, though not quite as much so as the 410HLF. The 610HLF also has a tweeter, which the 810E does not. They're significantly different designs.

Also, the metal player I know with a big setup who uses his fingers has an Ampeg cab. I use a pick much of the time, and I only sometimes use an ampeg cab, and it's a 1x15.

Can a mod please close this thread?? Terrible waste of bandwidth. 5 pages, and actually about 1 is really about the OP? Come on, guys...

" I am right!
- No, I am!
- Hey, stop insulting me, I said I am!
- No you're not, I am right, because I am always right..."

Ridiculous...

So, you missed the part about him calling me a dick, and focused on my reply to that... Thanks for playing, you can go back to fawning over Jimmy's every word, now...

I've read every thing you and JimmyM posted, and he had every right to call you a dick. He simply responded how the OP would've wanted him to respond- with an opinion. Opinions aren't facts, as you have your opinions, and Jimmy has his. Pretty much everybody who had a different opinion than you, you responded similar to this- "Why would you want that cab? That thing doesn't push as much air as my 810. Do you even know what metal sounds like? Play the Mesa and come back and tell me which one sounds the best." Honestly, when I listen to metal, I can hardly hear the bass. But when I do, it's mostly distorted anyway. And yeah, every metal player I've talked to says that they try and find the loudest rig possible. Just deal with the fact the everyone has their opinions, whether they share the same opinion with you or not. And really, you pretty much started this whole mess.

I disagree with part of this. Metal bass tone isn't all distortion, there are a lot of metal bands who have great bass tones, and don't just buy a rig to get as loud as they can. At least not where I'm from.

I disagree with your recap of this mess, but am done wasting any more time on you...

I wonder what cab the OP is currently using?
What do you like not like about it? Besides being drowned out.
What tuning you using? What kind of gear is your guitarist(s) using?
Do you want to sound like Alex? Or do you just play like him (tech-ish)?
You play at places with a decent PA?

Other than questions I cant offer any advice, because I aint good enough to play DM yet. But from all of the DM bands I've seen/heard, Mids are your friend.
