need help picking a new bass

I think you should play more on your current rig so you get more of a feel for bass and keep searching for awhile. Put yourself in the position where you've been playing for awhile and you have finally found your 'style' and what you need to shape the sound you want. $1000 is a great budget to have, so why don't you wait until you know what you are looking for before you decide to throw your money one way and decide all along you should have gone another. Not to discourage you from buying now because I don't know what gear you have now, but a lot of people jump into rigs before they really know what they want.

MASH -

Take your strap with you when you try out a bass so you can feel the weight and balance while playing standing up.

Re the amp, I bought a G-K MB210 over an MB212 because I can add on an 8 ohm cab in the future. The MB210 amp puts out 350 watts into its internal 8 ohm Neo speakers. When an external cab is added (must be 8 ohms and handle at least 300 watts), the amp output increase to 500 watts. The MB212 (and the MB115) do not have an output for an external cab.

Re. the bass, try to explore the difference between a passive bass (no preamp) and an active one with a preamp (and battery). Any of the G-K MB combo amps afford enough EQ and gain so that you can get a lot of tone variety out of a passive bass.

Try out as many basses as you can before buying.
