I have a 5 string i wish to put new pickups in. it has a p style pick up. i was looking to put a emg 40hz pick up in replacement. is this a good idea or is there something better i could put in its place

need help selecting pickups

well, if you did that wouldn't you have to do routing work? The EMG you mention is in a soapbar shape, very different from the P shape.

P Bass replacement pickups with a deep, smooth tone with lots of lows and low mids.
58CBP
"Classic Bass" CB series bass pickups are passive designs featuring an extended and more resonant frequency range. They have far more "air" and definition at the top without sacrificing lows and low mids. They are cast in epoxy to remove unwanted feedback and microphonics.
