Need In-Ear Monitors

Hey,
I'm looking for some affordable in-ear monitors on a budget. I want wireless to, looking for mobility but I'm also hoping for good quality with this purchase, otherwise, what's the point. Any tips?

what's "affordable"?

for maybe a grand, you could get a shure psm 400 (that's as cheap as you can go and not get junk), and then upgrade the earpieces themselves to at least a dual-driver set-up for another $2-300. (trust me, single-driver is a drag for bass).

remember, you then need a "real" PA with separate monitor mixes for each player, and time to dial all that in.

A PSM200 is basically the same unit in mono.. very few monitor sends are stereo.

Add to this you really don't need an aux send.. 90% of monitor alterations are to hear "more me" there are "pass through" mixers or boxes like a RollsPM351 that serve as this function...

OPINION...

I'd start hardwire with a Rolls PM351 (or PM351 --- depending on the use)....

With wireless IEM, you're normally also talking wireless bass.

I have a diagragm of a system that cost about $500 and has tons of built in flexibility.. it did take some used shoping to pull it together.

I picked up a "used" PSM 200 from MF for $127.00!!! It came with the box and all. I just got a pair if custom mold Alien Ears with the triple driver for $299. Less than $500.00 for wireless and custom molds. Seek and ye shall find.

yes you could....

you could remove the wireless for simplicity.

The only real drawback to the rolls is that it doesn't have a trim pot (your mixer is supposed to)

I have had some expensive botiques that clipped..

Im assuming youll be using a typical mixing board for your feed..If im not mistaken youll need stereo out of each channel to get proper separation..perhaps using 2 channels on the board for each input... another thing to think about

not trying to dissuade you , thinking of all the avenues..

The "who's running" is a valid argument.

It's rare to find a sound person monitoring via headphones... they normally correct by request or complaint.

The reason I keep a pass through mixer on my rack is to add "more me" without bothering sound crews.. silly that adding monitor mixer makes things less complex.

right, stereo is sweet but mono will do fine.

some stereo systems (like the aforementioned 400) can be set to "mix mode", where two inputs get mixed in mono and sent equally to each ear. you could have the "more me" setup in one side and a regular mix in the other side, so you could adjust between the two via the beltpack without running back to the mixing board.

you can also "cheat" with the psm 400, by having one transmitter but two receiver beltpacks. you run mono mixes for two people, one mix into each side of the transmitter. the beltpacks get set to the same channel, and to "mix mode" (so everything goes into both ears). you then pan one pack all left and the other all right to get the two distinct mono mixes.
