Need instructions in stripping a Polyurethane Bass Neck

I have two maple Precision Bass necks that I would like to strip the polyurethane off and re-finish in nitrocellulose. One is an 80's aftermarket neck that was poorly finished in poly and one is a newer 50's Vintera ii neck. I have read that a heat gun and a scraper is an effective solution, but I am worried the heat will warm the glue holding the frets and cause them to pop out of place. Does anyone have any experience or pointers they can lend in this process?
