Need little info on this J Bass

I`m interested if someone can tell me what is use of 4 holes between bridge and p-up that appears on vintage J basses.

I believe that the four holes were used to hold "mutes" for each string. They were adjustable metal "hinges" for lack of a better term, with foam/rubber ends that would/could be used deaden or better yet mute the strings.

You usually could not see these since the "ashtray" bridge cover would cover them up.
