I am going to get my bass set up tomorrow and I might get some new strings, but not sure what to get. Right now I have D'addario chromes, but they don't have enough growl. I am looking for a string that can give me a deep tone w/ some midrange growl. Thanks!
1) TI Jazz Flats have a nice mid-based tone to them while still having that 'thump' you get from flats. Pricey, but sounds like they might work for you.
2) Nickel rounds. Good warmth (not as much 'zing' as steel rounds give you). I'd say some DR Sunbeams or D'addario XL's might be good.
3) My personal choice: keep the Chromes (very good strings), and fiddle with your amp's EQ. I see that you have a VM Jazz - if you back off the neck pickup a bit you'll get some more growl. Your hand placement & attack has a lot to do with tone as well. Work on your technique.
