need preamp help

You'll need to be a lot more specific in your request. What's your realistic budget? What kinds of controls do you want it to have? Classic metal, Nu metal, Death metal, or what? They all have different tones.

Also, I'm guessing you haven't done any reading in this forum yet. Please do that. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of threads about preamps here. Just do some random reading for a couple of days. If you are impatient and want to cut right to it, search on "metal" or whatever specific genres you like, or specific artists/tunes/albums you want to sound like, and I bet you find what you're looking for. :)

put a gain pot in

It isn't that simple. Adding a gain pot would require modification to the preamp's wiring.

It would be a difficult task to reverse engineer a preamp to figure out it's original wiring. (Unless you were fortunate enough to have a written schematic on hand to tinker with.)
Most preamps are sealed in epoxy or wax or something too. I don't know of any way to remove the epoxy from a preamp module without damaging it.

I'm also a bit puzzled at how adding a gain pot is going to solve the OP's problem of needing a new preamp?
That's pretty much just a random suggestion that isn't related to anything the OP said.
