Need recommendations for light basses

A five string that is incredibly light is the Washburn XB125.

It is also incredibly good value. I got mine for about £200 ($325), and for the price you get 5 strings (with a decent B string), 2 awesome P-90 pickups and active electronics. They also look great as well.

Ask anyone who's played it and they will tell you it's an amazingly good value bass, up there with basses that cost a lot more.

I have a great short scale bass, 4 string, from Landing. Jimmy Wilson is the owner / luthier, and he custom built a bass for me at a very reasonable price. My bass is shown here in my icon. You can also see my bass at Link Removed, on Jimmy's web site. Scroll down; it's the blue bass.

You'll find many short scale basses, and there's always room to make alterations.

I made about the lightest bass I've ever played with parts from Allparts and WD. It's a Jazz copy and the guy at WD was kind enough to search out a nice, lightweight body. It sounds great and it's now my favorite live bass.

Your home made bass sounds pretty cool. Did you do your own wiring and staining / painting also? How long did your project take, and are you happy with the results?

I hadn't considered taking that route, with ordering parts and assembling a new axe. I think I'd worry about having a balanced, problem-free bass when I finished. I'm interested in learning more about your results.

The secret to balancing it was to use Gotoh Res-O-Lite 350 tuners 4 of which weigh the about the same as 3 Hipshot Ultralights and removing the tuner bushings (those little things add just enough weight to make a difference at this level). I also shifted the bottom strap button several inches up the side to better balance it and use a neoprene strap which stays put and also alleviates pressure on my shoulder.

I selected the rest of the parts specifically to make it lightweight and I didn't have to rout under the guard or carve contours to lighten the body.
