I'd suggest you start with learning your basic scales, then as soon as you can start learning your interval and how they apply to chord progression. Transcribing helps you see what intervals are being used, so pick a song you like learn it by ear if you can, and take notice to the intervals and progression of the song. This might not be popular but get away from tabs as soon as possible because they limit your knowledge of the song.
I used Bass guitar for dummies, and it was decent but not informative enough for me as to why I was using some of these techniques. Lastly I find learning to read sheet music has been helpful in instances.
Books I've used: Bass Guitar for dummies I found was okay but did not provide me with enough information as to why I was using some of these techniques. Jazzology was good for learning about intervals and phrasing, only problem is book is in treble clef so you'll have to transcribe to bass clef, and finally scottsbasslessons.com is an absolute incredible resource.
P.S. If you can find and instructor you should, just make sure he's a bassist and not a guitarist teaching bass.
