Need Some Cab/Head Help

I am pretty much a rookie when it comes to heads and cabs, I have always used combos until just recently. I was just given a head and a cab to use from a few bassist friends of mine, the only problem is this.....

The head puts out 450Watts@4 Ohms and the cab is a 4x10, 400Watt@8 Ohms.

Can i run these two together without doing any damage to either? is there a way to maximize the sound from this set up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unless the head is all tube it will work fine. At that power rating I'm assuming its not.

Assuming you're not talking about a tube amp, you can run a 4 ohm, an 8 ohm, or two 8 ohm cabs (equals 4 ohm load). As long as you don't try to run the speakers at too high a wattage you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info guys. It is not a tube, I think I am going to try to add a 2x10 @8 Ohm to maximize the sound, as well.

If you're going to do that, it might be a good idea to work it out so that each of the speakers in the 210 are only working as hard as those in the 410. You'll extend the life of the 210 that way (and it'll probably sound better).

You'll only get half the wattage out of the amp. Otherwise it'll be fine. As long as its a solid state head.

I would get a 1x15 instead of a 2x10, you will get more of a fat bottom ... and fat bottoms make the world go around! Cheers!
