need some help

currently for my amp setup I use an Ampeg B2R bass head and a peavey TVX-4x12 cab (4ohm cab I believe, I could be wrong though). I like the sound and all but it doesn't have much output unless I really crank it but then it starts to get real farty and clip. I'm just trying to figure out if it's the head and I just need to get a more powerful head, or if it's the cab and I need a different style of cab or a combination of cabs. any help appreciated. If it's the head I'm currently looking at a used GK 400RB-III. will that help any? is it more powerful than the ampeg? again any and all help is appreciated! thanks guys!

If it's farting, then it's the cabinet that simply can't put out more volume.

If the amp shows that it's clipping, then it's the amp.

That said, you can crank the amp to clipping if you try to get more loudness and the cab has hit power compression. That's the point where the speakers won't get any louder; extra wattage just heats them up. You push the amp louder and get nowhere.

so does that mean id need to get another cab to help my 4x12 or a different style of cab(s)? apologies in advance for my ignorance :hiding:

Purely a guess, but I'd say the amp is the weak point of your rig. I've used that Peavey 412 with an SVT CL, and it rocked. The GK you mentioned is a rock solid amp, but there's plenty others too. Read the amp forums for a while, and see what wide range of amps everyone's using.

+1

Unless there is something wrong with your cab, that thing should be able to get really loud.

Ditch the head

I just mentioned the GK cuz there's one near me for cheap on craigslist that I can hopefully test out (never buy without a test!). Would love an LMII but the chances of me finding one for less than $250 right now, slim, but I'll take what I can get!
