Need tech help with internet issues

Dear TB'ers,

I run windows 8.1 and I have this weird issue. Google won't help and I have limited knowledge so I'm lost myself, that's why I turn to my fellow bass player :)

Sometimes all my browsers just quit, like they just don't do anything anymore. None of them. It happens regularly, and takes about 30 seconds to 5 minutes until webpages load again. Chrome is the only one hinting towards a problem: "Establashing Host" (English translation of the for me Dutch text in the left-bottom corner). It just takes ages to get a page loaded.

Funny thing is, it's not malware (Malwarebytes doesn't find anything with the latest database) and it's not the actual connection as well (full wifi bars, I stream music in-browser and I play online games with NO problem whatsoever).

Can someone point me towards the potential problem?

Chrome has a problem with leaving tasks running when you close the browser. Firefox may be preferable to Chrome these days.

I love Win 8.1, but... had a problem with wireless networking. There are some known bugs, and the trick that finally worked for me was to open a command window in administrator mode (right click in the icon to see the option to do this) and enter the command:

netsh winsock reset

Then reboot. But at the same time, if you have bars, then I don't think it's a problem with your computer. Does your wireless box have an IP address such as 168.192.0.1? (You might have to google for the number typically used by your brand of box). You can enter that address as a URL, and should get some sort of status page for the box, that might help you diagnose things further.

Can you get to the Web via your cell phone when it is connected to the same wireless router?

Hi just want to first ask if you have cleared any and all browsing data, run a a computer adn registry cleaner like Ccleaner adn fixed all issues.
Also you should try out linux on that computer. you can make a cd/dvd or bootable usb stick. get the latest linux mint 17.1 from Linux Mint download choose the 32 or 64 bit xfce version at bottom of list. to burn it to usb just install unetbootin on your windows os. you can boot from the flash drive and test it without the need for installing. and you can then test if the internet is working Mint has firefox built in as the default browser. thsi will tell you if it is your computer hardware as apposed to just the windows operating system you currently have.

if you like Linux Mint then you can install it. dual boot with windows is not hard to setup.
this will help you determine what the problems are. its obviously not your network or isp that si to blame.

if you need help with linux mint xfce version you will find many youtube videos on it. just remember you are going to instrall mint 17.1 xfce not any of teh others.

I regard Win 8.1 as a bug, not a feature. I'm getting ready to buy an HP Spectre x360 and want to get a downgrade to Win7 as part of the purchase. I don't see Linux as helpful, because you're off the reservation for all tech support when you run it yourself.

That said, Chrome does indeed often leave multiple instances running. I have had an occasional problem with Firefox locking up, too.
