Need to replace Fender MIA Dimension Bass electronics

Just got a Squier Deluxe Dimension V
I like it a fair bit, except it sounds too growly, bright, hairy, and sort of buzzy for my taste. I want a smoother more mellow tone. I did just put brand new strings on it, so I guess I should wait a bit for them to gunk/funk up and darken down a bit?

That being said, has anyone ever installed a tone control?

i have a dimension american deluxe hh. i could not get this thing to sound good to my ears. been plying for 45 years ...so i have a good ear for bass guitar sounds. I thought the pickups were the issue but there are no replacements.. so I swapped out the Fender Pre for an Aguilar obp-3 i had.WOW.....totally different beast.the pickups are fine....its the factory pre amp which is poop.

Just wondering - when you replaced the preamp, did you manage to keep the 5 way switch ok?
