Need your help, TB. Would you return this bass??

I’ve been posting about the new Fodera I just got from Sweetwater. It’s beautiful and I got 25% off list. Great deal, right?

I got the bass home and it was gorgeous. I had a ball playing around with it. But after a bit, I noticed a small crack just under the finish on the neck, extending from the nut. Seems like the kind of thing that may get worse with time.

I’ve reached out to my Sweetwater rep & I’m sure I’ll hear back from him on Monday. But in the meantime, I’m not sure what to do. I did get a killer deal on this (it was still well over $5k), but the listing said nothing about a minor blemish or a crack in the finish. It was being sold as new.

If it is something that could get worse with time, I’m thinking I may have to return it. What would you do?

Maybe the crack wasn't there until after "a hit"

I wouldn't for that amount of cash, but I too wonder what "after a hit" meant.

From your pictures, it more like paint crack than wood crack.
It is worth if possible get another 25% cash rebate since they dint mention this issue earlier in list.

I would've been on my way to the UPS Store less than three minutes after seeing that. That's lightyears beyond "acceptable" on a Fodera.

According to their endorsing artists, Fodera will make it right, so I'd contact them.

Definitely a finish crack but I've never seen one there before, only neck pockets. It doesn't make sense why it would happen there. Perhaps that's why it was 25% off? But as it wasn't mentioned I would say something. Even at 25% off I wouldn't want that on a bass north of 5 grand.

As a rule of thumb the less an instrument costs the more acceptable minor flaws become. If you're spending what to you is expensive on an instrument, it had better be as close to perfect as possible. I don't know what your financial situation is and for you $5k may be chump change, but it's a lot more than most people would pay for a blemished instrument. If you want to spend that much for mojo get a pre-CBS Fender. At least if you try to flip it you'll get your money back.

Somehow, Sweatwater doesn't seem like the kinda place I'd wanna to buy a Fodera from, or any guitar in that price range. Nor Zzounds, Sam Ash, Musicians Friend, etc. When I see a Fodera listed on Sweatwater I think..."what's wrong with this picture?" But that's me.

Hope they send you a better example! Cheers.

For that kind of $$, unless it was a flaw that was noted prior to completion of the sale, I would expect perfection.

I would start the process of returning/exchanging it if it were me.

if it was a bass I was going to play hard and use as my #1, I wouldnt worry about it. Looks like a minor finish issue.

Could have been damaged in transit too, I’d return it.

if it were used, I would think nothing of it.
