Negative Comments On YouTube

So I was just saying I can understand why people get angry and want to take that out on the object of their frustration.

I think it's understandable - it's like on TB when you see a thread title that looks interesting, but is actually just very badly worded - but YouTube is on a vaster scale!! :eek:

The other thing that seems strange to me - is that when I was starting out playing, I was shy about playing for close relatives in case of them appearing "underwhelmed" - to put it up for the whole world to see, would have been unthinkable - beyond embarassment to a new level of humilation!! :eek: I can't imagine doing that...:confused:

Well, I'm kind of looking at it from the perspective of what happened to my kids when they had posted some stuff, I'm not really focusing solely on music-related vids, or on "beginners" posting their (bad) interpretation of Stairway to Heaven, :p I'm really looking at it on a grander scale. There's just soooo much there and sooo many videos on every topic imaginable that you almost have to expect a lot of extraneous stuff. You just cant avoid it.. I do wish that they would develop some sort of better searching feature though that might eliminate a lot of the garbage.

In regards to the negative comments though - some may be founded, but I also think though that there are a lot of "teenyboppers" who search for videos/users to sort of pick on as a pastime.

So - on occasions, I have searched for some live footage, based on comments I have heard on TB or elsewhere - then get directed to a Youtube video - which turns out to be somebody playing badly over the top of the original album recording...:mad:

It's very annoying when you think you are going to find some great live footage and then find this kind of rubbish - it's what makes Youtube a huge waste of time and very frustrating to use!!

If I'm doing a search for a live version of Rush doing 2112 and I see a thumbnail of a teenage kid in his bedroom, I don't click on it expecting to see Geddy Lee.

That's how I see it. Hence the name - "You" "Tube"

If folks are looking for consistency in quality, what do you expect from a site that lets anyone upload just about anything anytime in low res, poor quality sound?

As they say, you get what you pay for.

You want great quality, without searching through the mess? Buy the DVD.

But if it's a cover band playing it live, many times all you'll see in the thumbnail are stage lights and maybe a shadowy outline of someone. I don't mind that Youtube is so messy--I agree with you, that's the nature of the beast. But it pisses me off when someone misrepresents the content in their title (looking to boost their views, I'm sure). If they're doing a cover, they need to either put that word in the title or put their own name or their band's name in it.

What tends to happen is that somebody on TB will link to some concert footage on YouTube and then you see all these links down the side with pictures from the album/CD cover and you have no idea what they are without clicking on them - it's only when you click that you realise it's a waste of time...:hmm:

Then you think - maybe one of those other dozen links had the "real deal" and go back and repeat the process until you get really mad..:p

I agree - but then can we have a policy on TB where it is banned to post links to YouTube, as it invariably leaves me annoyed with it!! :p

If it wasn't for TB I would never go to YouTube, but there are all these threads that say "look at this" or "what do you think of this" etc. with a link and then you get drawn in to looking and then it's a slippery slope!!

i too have gone searching for something specific only to be foiled by a bad cover. it never occurred to me to leave neg comments or yell at a computer screen, tho. i think that mite be a bigger waste of time. once i see it's not what i want, i move on. which is pretty easy to do, and does not damage my delicate nerves.

as for negative comments, i have only posted one video (a rush job, no not 2112) and got one neg comment. i responded with - thanks for taking the time to watch our video and for your interest in our band.

maybe i should try information highway rage? sounds like... fun?
