New to this site, so apologies if this topic has been thrashed out before.. recently bought some very nice EBS neo cabs to cut down on the weight of my old school heavyweight speaker stack. On their own they sound great, though lack a little of the warmth of traditional 'ferrous' speakers. However, next to two driven guitar rigs and a drummer they just don't cut through, lack character and generally sound rather 'brittle'. Is this a characteristic trade off with neodymium lightweight gear?

Neo cabs vs traditional heavyweights

Its not to o with the neo, its to do with the whole speaker design, they are probably just cleaner sounding that you previous speakers, the bit of speaker breakup adding the fur and midrange. Also, might not be as worn in.
Correct. The difference you hear has ZERO to do with the type of magnet used, and everything to do with the design of the cab itself. Generally, more speakers = more sound, and/or bigger sound.

Oh, the way round it is bump some midrange, where exactly is a taste call. Its all to o with distortion, subtle enough to call it 'character', or 'warmth'. Also, might have more top end on the neo speakers, its mostly to do with newer designs, less distortion, broader frequency range, so eq some of that out.

And also some cabs with ferrite magnet speakers sound and perform better than others with neo magnet speakers. Nothing to do with the magnet material!
