New Amp for me Peavey Combo 300.

Just traded my Fender Bassman60 for a Peavey Combo 300, even up. This thing is really nice. Gonna need help figuring out all the EQ possibilities.

A really underrated amp, nice score! Just remember, the EQ on that is active, not passive, so a little goes a long way. Mine sounded great with one of my basses (passive single coils), one I couldn't get a consistent tone with (active humbuckers). But I sold it to a guy with a P with a quarter pounder in it and it was amazing sounding. The only negative to these amps IMO is the weight. If it doesn't have wheels, get some! I've been playing through peavey bass amps and cabs for a decade now, and I'm still shocked to hear that most people's opinion of them aren't all that good. I currently play a vb-2 all tube amp w/ tour series 4x10 and 1x15. Wouldn't trade it for the world.... except maybe a vb-3 pro!

That amp was the best buy in used bass amps for many years. You can even add a piezo tweeter to it and bring it up into the 1990's! With an extension cabinet, you will get the full wattage, and with the DDT compression, the impact of a more powerful amp. The EQ is great. Add a guitar amp you might have laying around, and you can biamp the rig...flashback to the 80's. The downside is the weight. But for the young and strong, have fun with it. It is a classic workhorse. It might need new filter caps to restore headroom and punch but that shouldn't be very expensive. As modern caps are smaller than the ones of that day, more capacitance can be easily added to even improve the headroom. One can replace the 4558 op amps with better bifets (LF353, TL072 etc) and get improved clarity and overall better tone.

And add that tweeter....

Its a solid brand to me. Outside of SWR, peavey is all I've used. Not because it was all I could afford, and peavey is affordable, but because I just loved the tone and versatility of the amps themselves.

An old peavey workhorse I miss dearly is an old mark IV head I used with a 2x15 JBL speaker cab. I believe the cab was meant to be used as a PA cab, but it sounded sooooo nice regardless. I really miss that stack. Especially the amp.
