New at Bass Guitars

Hey guys! Im interested in picking up bass guitar and i need help figuring out a good one to get. I want to mess around with it alot and play different types of music like rock and metal but also some reggae and stuff like that. I want to get a nice bass for a beginner but i also dont want to get some cheap one that I'll want to replace after a year. so i'm looking for something thats nice and versatile (i think a precision bass or a PJ sounds more like what I want after I did some research but you guys would problly know better) also I think I want a 4 string but Im not sure if a 5 string might be better depending on the types of music I said I want to play (again you guys problly know better so please educate me haha) The maximum I can spend is problly around $300 so anything lower than that.

Btw after seeing other forums from beginners asking the same type of question as me some people suggested a Peavey Millennium Bass BXP. or a SX ursa 3 RN P/J. or Tobias Toby Standard IV Bass.

If you guys have any feedback on if which of those sounds good for beginners or if you have any other suggestions thatd be awesome. Sorry if this was a long post but thanks for your help!

Welcome! A used Squier will give you decent quality and stay within your budget. You say the P sounds most like what you want... well, Fender invented them, and Squier is owned by Fender, so....

Personally, I think you should consider a Jazz (Squier again). J-basses have a midrange bite that cuts through the mix nicely in rock and metal, and is often considered the bass of choice for reggae (solo the neck pickup and cut the treble).

Also, you might want to re-post this under "basses". You'll get a lot more replies there. Not a lot of people check out the new member intros. Just brace yourself for the "best bass for metal comments". Kind of a running joke around here.

Fender J all the way. First got squire J from GC online for $200 six months ago, love it. Now I got to get all the knock-off's.
It is addicting, lots of cool cheap and fun basses.....schecter, warlock, warwick, Beatles bass, have fun!

I have a Fender Squire 'P' bass and love it. Didn't cost the earth, but it is a reasonably decent quality first bass. It stays in tune and has a nice smooth action to play.
I am just starting out on bass, and I did a lot of research before I purchased this bass.
My son has a Yamaha 270rbx model (I think) and it got great reviews for a decent quality first bass but it seems to go out of tune too easily.
