I just started a band about 2 weeks ago.1st drummer and lead guitarist/vocals I tried clicked. The rhythm guitarist was good but after receiving a text from my lead guitarist he just wasn't feeling it so he brought in his friend to play rhythm. And actually I think he's gunna lead cause he's awesome and i'm happy we made the change.with that said we're an "original" band but since we gotta start somewhere we learned a few covers to get things started. And we already got 1 original that I wrote down as a band. But i'm tiredof hearing the words like "soon" and take our time,"within time" and yeah adventually.ya know what I mean.It6's like alright we're going into our 4th practice in 3 less then 3 weeks.LETS GET WRITING!! No more cover,no more taking our time.THE time is now! anyone ever have this issue? It's like ive been playing covers my whole life,I just wanna start creating music.

If a shipwright can make a ship, and a wheelwright cam make a wheel, I suppose a songwright can make a song...

Just poking a little fun. OP, I'm pleased to hear it. I only ever had one originals project, we had lots of great ideas and jams but could never get over the hump to actually turning them into songs. Now I'm juggling cover bands, which I love, but it's not leaving time to get together with people to record. Good to hear someone serious about getting it done.

Don't let us cynical old guys get you down.
No better learning experience than getting out there and doing it.
But in the back of your mind, you might be confronted with the possibility that you'd be better prepared for an all-originals format with a bit of background in songwriting and compositional theory.
There are a bunch of one-hit wonders who had a great concept for -one- good song played well.
So please, never stop learning, and keep your ears and mind open to new influences.
Donno what kind of music you want to go write and play - you didn't say. 3-chord rock will take you only so far.

OTOH - Mozart was writing symphonies at your age, so go do it !

thanx for all the ball busting guys..its my 1st band so i'm not to experienced.thanx anyways though

Just yanking your chain, man. Good luck with the new band. It's great to have that drive. I had an originals project I liked but finally quit when they just jammed and jammed and never got anything actually shaped up into songs.

no one ever got anywhere by f*cking around. Got for it man, book some gigs, get some recording done. Don't aim for perfection. Don't make plans for a few months down the track. Book a show, get yourself a gig lined up and commit to playing a whole set of originals. I like your style dude, the world respects proactive people.

Good luck Nykki. All three of my bands are original acts, but each one has a primary composer (not me). They usually bring the core material in and the rest of the band mates contribute to the overall arrangement. We sometimes offer a new bridge or intros/outros, but the core of the song is usually established when it's brought in. Have a little patience and take the time to figure out how it will work in your band. Again, best of luck.

You're way behind dude, most bands are signed to a major label by their 4th practice...
we were signed by the second rehearsal , had a hit record by the third, descended into heroin addiction by the 4th , some members died , others rehabbed rehearsals 5 and 6 , we broke up on the 7th and then reformed, did a "goodbye" reunion tour between rehearsals 8 and nine the rest of us died rehearsal 10 from the effects of depravity , drugs and alcohol addiction , lives lived fast and hard. it was a helluva three months let me tell you

So what's been keeping you from writing up til now?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but every originals project I've ever been involved in was built around a bunch of songs already written by one or more members of the project. Some had been writing for years before they took their ideas to a band.

Point being, stop bitchin and start writing. Unless of course you are depending on your bandmates to do all the lyrics and music.
