Just to make my life a little more challenging, I went and picked up my new bass today from St. Louis Strings. It's a 2017 "Krutz 550" 7/8-size bass, with 42-1/2" scale.

I traded up with my KC Strings Heartland Series bass (3/4 size, with sloped shoulders) because I wanted a bass with more low-end power. It has that ... not floor-shaking, but definitely more.

I had not expected to have so much difficulty adjusting to the longer scale. Also, there's quite a wolf tone on the D-string G. I had them put the Gamuts-over-Olivs from my trade-in on the new bass, and I may have to go with an Oliv for the G string. It's definitely kicking my *ss, but that's one more thing to practice on.

I used to keep my bass in the living room. Plenty of head space - EXCEPT for the beam running across the ceiling between the living and dining rooms. Yeah, there are a few dings in that beam and dents on my scroll.

During nicer weather, our instruments live out on our 3-season room. We had a nice high tray ceiling installed - but I've clipped the hanging ceiling fans MORE than a couple of times. Much more exciting when they are rotating...

Went from a 41.5 to 43.5 bass a few years ago.

First 2 weeks I was freaking out thinking I was making a huge mistake (get it?). Both scale length and the big shoulders.

I pretended I was a beginner again and just did scales and walking blues for a few days. Really playing it with the bow helped a ton. Paying attention to technique IMO is super important too. I can be “lazy” and squish my left hand on a smaller bass but this requires perfect, ron Carter level stretch and curve. But it’s all worth it
