New bass options

Hey all! So, first post here, though I've lurked intermittently. Anyway, I recently had to sell my Spector Legend 5 to make rent money, and I'm in the market for a new bass now that my finances have stabilized somewhat.

I LOVED the feel of my Spector, but I found I wasn't ever really ecstatic with the sound. To me, it sounded like it was missing something in the low-mid range. I need a 5 string, as after playing one for years, I'd rather not go back to a 4, as I've gotten so accustomed to having that low B.

The only bass I've played recently that I remember being entirely taken by both the sound, feel, and look was a Sterling Stingray HH, but it's WAY out of my price range. I'm a student, I'm basically looking for something that I can play some shows with, that sounds decent, and won't give out on me for less that $600.

Another route I was thinking about going was buying a cheap bass and modding it heavily. Also, I love the look and customizability of Fender Jazz basses, but I can't say I've ever had much experience with a Fender 5 string neck.

Any thoughts?

I have a Spector Rebop 5 and it plays so nicely. However when I practice I always think that it doesn't sound right. UNTIL, I play it with others and then it really shines. The tone that to me sounds so strange by itself really, really sits well in the mix. My Jazz bass sometimes sounds clanky to me, My SX Ursa P/J often sounds farty, but my Spector always seems to sound just right, at least for finger style. For slap I would probably be reaching for my Jazz Bass or Rockbass. My Spector is my only 5 string, I've been eyeing the Brice 5 strings a Rondo for a while and lurking on E Bay for a deal perhaps on a clean Ibanez BTB.

Why don't you wait and see if you like the pickups in it first before you start lookin at new ones. You havent even gotten it yet,who's to say you wont like it stock?

I dunno. Old school guy here. Just get a decent $1K (USA) P-bass. The most versatile of all. If you need something else later, you can sell it for at least what you paid. Or more.
