I'm a noob here and on bass and I have G.A.S. I recently took up bass to fill a need in my church band. I normally play rhythm guitar, but the occassional lack of bass was hurting our sound, so I gave it a go. Needless to say, I'm diggin it substantially. I got an Ibanez SR500 (which is treating me very well) and a line6 studio 110 and started learning to play. The amp seems to perform well enough for what I need (easy to tote, decent direct out to the board, loud enough to be a monitor on stage), but I'm quite dissatisfied with it. The problem started one day when the drummer couldn't make it one day, the bassist drummed, and I got to play his '78 P bass through his bassman 100/1x15. Now my amp sounds horrible to me, enough so that I have trouble practicing. It's never wholly clean and although it sounds like a bass it doesn't feel like one, if that makes any sense. I will be able to buy a new amp in the next few months, so I'm trying to research what I want now instead of making another uninformed decision and ending up with more G.A.S.
Here's some info that's going into the decision process:
I know I don't need 1000W running through an 8X10 stack regardless of what the G.A.S. says. Our stage volume is minimalist and the drummer is both reasonable and shielded.
I play only at home to practice and about once a month in a school sized auditorium, hence the lack of need for a stadium filling rig.
I liked the pants flappage from the bassman I played, but I also like the sound of the other bassist who plays through an Eden WT-800/Bergantino HT322 setup. The former sounds more rock, the latter more jazz, but both sound good.
The local shop doesn't carry much for bass except a few Hartkes, some Marshalls (which I can't get into), Line6, and an occassional SWR rig. There is a GC close enough, and Bass Northwest is just a ferry ride away when I decide what I want to look more specifically at.
From what I've read so far, it seems that a 2X10 cab/combo or a 1X12 should be able to give enough boom and still provide clarity. I would like it to feel big but still sound musical.
I would like to keep the price under $1000, so no walkabout scout.
Without having actually played through any of these amps, here are a few I'm contemplating:
SWR Workingpro 2X10C or 12
Carvin BR510N, or BX500 head and a cab (expandability a plus)
Nemesis 210
Markbass CMD 121P (The eden/berg buy plays this when he doesn't want to haul the big rig around)
The questions I have are:
If my puny 75W are technically loud enough, how much higher should I aim without having to play at .6 volume all the time?
Are the amps I'm contemplating a decent compromise between the booming rock tone and the punchy jazz tone?
Is the 2X10/1X12 a good route to go or should I add 1X15 amps to the list?
Would an upgrade to another 1X10 (GB Shuttle 3.0-10T, Ibanez Promethean, etc) be enough of an upgrade to satisfy the bigger/louder/more gear lust?
Is my thinking reasonable, misguided, or just plain wrong on the process? I know how limited my knowledge is. I don't want to start fifteen degrees off course and completely miss the mark at the end of the journey.
