I would be cruising the classifieds here - I found this in about 30 seconds - For Sale - G&L L-2500 Tribute

@drewphishes not for nothing both Phil and Gordo both used these basses for a period of time
Although not a complete departure from the fender thing(G&L , Ernie Ball Music Man, and Fender all use the designs of Leo Fender) these are awesome versatile basses, has slap funk rock ect tones out of it for days, definitely worth checking out

Wow, you should have. I was about to suggest just this, or the double-cut ASB version. 34" scale, terrific build quality, remarkably bright for a semi-hollow. I love my ASB!

Edit: didn't read the whole thread before posting, but my endorsement still stands. Great bass for the $$, would get you into Grateful Dead territory.

I know it's not on-topic, but thank you very much for saying this. Extending the silent vowel at the end of a word is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

Well you see if you like it when your submarine fills up with flies, then you dive and you can't open a window to get them out! Very useful indeeeed.

Ibanez ATK. Loved the Ray tone and look....Couldn't afford one so I picked up an ATK off CL for pretty cheap. Fell in love and don't think I'll be shelling out for a Music Man any time soon.

I agree with the Ray34.

Sterling Ray34 is the closest thing you can get to a stingray. And its one of those basses where no mods are required. If you're the type that like to hotrod with aftermarket parts, a Squire vintage mod fretless with ebonol fingerboard is a great option. Or a Yamaha BB 424x or the new BB 434 which should be available soon.

Lots of great suggestions here. I'd suggest cycling through basses on the used market until you find one that you love. Try before you buy first of course to see if you even like it and it feels comfortable. Sometimes you have to live with a bass for the while an play it in context before you can really form an opinion IMHO. Then again, sometimes you just know...(but those basses usually cost $$$)

American MusicMan will cost you big $$$. I have owned a Stingray. Sold it. Not because it was a problem, just didn't hit my sound. I am an old school Pbass player. However, It was a blast to play! Great for slap and so forth. So many sounds to produce as a result of the fantastic electronics.

Your budget that you mentioned would be more in line with a Sterling by MusicMan bass. I have also played the Sterling and it is also a very fine bass. I would advise you to visit your music store of choice and try one. I think you would enjoy.

yeah Ive been looking at everything. Im thinking maybe a 5 string. I have a FSR jazz bass and a mike dirnt p bass currently. I always thought I was a jazz man but i havent been able to put the p down lately. I dnt know. I feel like one will pop up on craigslist soon enough that Ill have to have

StingRay or Rickenbacker would be the obvious next choices. But maybe you should look at a neck-through design bass?
