New Bass

You'll never get a consensus. Basses are so versatile, and people's opinions are so varied. May as well ask what the best food is.

Try this approach: can you describe some players who have tones that you like? Even with the same gear, matching tones can be challenging, but it's a start. Come up with some bands/bassists that have a sound you'd kinda like to emulate, and figure out what they use.

Indie Rock eh? I really don't think that should determine which bass you get.

What kind of playing experience do you have? What basses have you owned/played in the past. Are you looking for a 4 string, or a 5, or 6+? Are you comfortable playing a long scale bass or do you prefer shorter ones? What is your budget on this bass?
