New bassist question

Hey, I'm a guitarist/soon to be bassist, and I need to know something. I have a regular Line 6 Spider III amplifier that worked with my Laguna, and after checking up at my neighborhood Guitar Center, learned that I'll need to get a new amp and a new cord for a bass guitar.
Not that I can't afford it, but I was wondering, is it really necessary? I mean, could I use my regular guitar amp and cable to play a bass guitar with?

Please answer, and thanks for the help

Yeah, I'm just gonna be playing at home with the volume fairly low 99% of the time. If I go to a gig or something, my friends will probably have an amp that can handle it. Thanks guys, just saved me a bunch of money.
