Actually, just the opposite, don't hurt yourself playing. Try to judge for yourself what pain is good and what pain is bad. Chances are, if you're playing and you get any sharp sudden pains, you're doing something wrong. Or you broke a string.

You bought a bass - great decision! IMHO any bass you can afford is a good one to start on. In time you'll decide whether you want to upgrade and how good the bass was.
One thing though, I regret having sold my first bass. I wish I had kept on to it, but it funded another slightly better bass, which I then sold for a slightly better bass, etc.
Think before selling your first bass, but hey we're all young once!
